Yeah.

I'd go with Nirvana, or the Doors.

(Beyond all of the absolute crap millions of people claim to be good music...)

Nirvana was culturally significant, but the quality of their music is debatable, to me. There were alot of bands that could have taken the mantle from them, but just didn't have the luck of, "right place, right time".

It's not that they a bad band, in my opinion...simply that they don't live up to the almost unfair level of hype heaped upon them.

As far as the Doors...what Lester Bang remarks about Jim Morrison in "Almost Famous" rings true to me. JIm Morrison had his moments, but he simply tried to hard to be deep to me. I'd say the majority of his writing was pretenious hippy garbage. Plus, I think his singing becomes grating after a while. The band were pretty good, though.

Hell, there are way to many for me to list. I would rather address my hatred of bands dead on in a thread about said band than a thread devoted to picking bands I hate out. If I see something that sucks and is overrated, Ill be sure to let you know. wink

I couldn't agree more with anyone that's said U2. Their albums have been absolutely terrible, yet they get more radio-play and general coverage than any other deserving band out there. That "Vertigo" song honestly makes me want to drink draino whenever I hear it.

Oh yeah, and Nickelback and Three Days Grace.

Zero musical talent, zero lyrical talent.

May they all rot in hell if either of them release another album.

most bands on any "pop" (yes including "pop" rock) are overrated. Linkin Park is the one that comes to mind.

Yeah, fine, some of the bands might have great songs,
but for the most part, the all suck a huge one

The White Stripes ( the only credit I will give them is pushing the limits of how little tallent you need to be sucessful)

Black Sabbath (All they were was a 'evil' version of Cream, still a good band but highly overrated)

Mike Patton (Genius , but a turd genius)

Meyhem

Radiohead (maybe I just don't see anything to special, I prefer Anathema)

Newer (well, kinda) bands:

Creed
Nickelback
Coldplay

More "classic" bands/performers

Grateful Dead
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Elvis
U2
Van Halen (Sammy Hagar era)

Note" just because I have these bands listed, doesn't necessarily mean I dislike them...I just think they've been placed on too high of a pedestal. However.... I DO despise Creed and Nickelback!

Hmmm ....

I'm gonna jump into the fray and change tack a little here.

Most of the time people are naming bands they don't like as being the most "overrated". Of course that's what we're going to do. If a band is lauded and I don't like the band's music, I'm going to immediately cry overrated.

So what I'm gonna do here is name a band that I love and state why I think they are overrated.

Radiohead.

They've gone from mainstream-ish pop that got mostly ignored (The Bends, Pablo Honey) to a concept album (OK Computer) that got them crowned the "Saviors of Rock and Roll" in a Rolling Stone article and made everyone's "Best of the Year" list to some experimental recording (Kid A, Amnesiac, parts of Hail To The Thief). Critics often hail them as the cutting edge, that what they are doing is reinventing rock and roll.

No. What they are doing is recording what they want to record, damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead.

It takes a bit of courage and some ego to do that kind of thing, but are they changing the face of rock and roll? No.

Are they 'saving' rock and roll. No.

They're making albums and people are buying them. If they were really "Saving rock and roll" we wouldn't be inundated with crap on the airwaves. Everyone would be trying to do what Radiohead are doing, but very few are.

Anyway, I think Radiohead is overrated. I still like them, though.

Guns and fuckin' Roses.

Can we say vomit?

Those of you who hate U2, I'm curious, have you ever listened to their HATED work? I.E. Zooropa and Pop. Those ablums are the best. The only real album they have that received a LOT of airplay was Joshua Tree. And Achtung Baby received some as well. Then they went through about a seven year period of being pretty unfuckingpopular.

U2 are rated high simply because they have longevity (I spelled that wrong), which is rare nowadays.

I just wonder how many people really think about that.

I am getting really sad seeing U2 and Radiohead so many times over here. Oh well.

U2

Their guitar player is like a one trick pony. He has one riff that he recycles over and over again. Their rythm section is just weak. Then there's Bono. Need I say more.

It baffles me how people listen to those jokers.
