I doubt said person is actually looking for "hardcore" punk... rather, they're looking for punk... and like the word hardcore

as they like the clash, DKM, and Blink.....
you'd probably enjoy:
Rise Against, Thrice, Bigwig, AFI, Choke, Propagandhi, Goldfinger, NOFX, The Vandals, Strung Out, Bad Religion, Lagwagon, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Real Mckenzies, Flogging Molly, Coheed & Cambria...

but if you're actually looking for "hardcore punk", then I suggest to you:
The Killing Tree, Refused, Ignite, Sick Of It All, Throwdown, The Killing Flame, Snapcase, Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc.

When I think harcore punk, I think of dissonance, energy, and noises that to the untrained/unsofistocated ear sound wretched. AKA stuff I listened to in highschool to drive my mom nuts..
The Crucifucks, Crass, Black Flag, The Lincolns, The Germs (ha! I said it before richiedagger could) Big Black, Flipper, Minor Threat and so much more, but it just gets terribly derivative from there.

If you want to hear new music why dont you buy some compilations to start off with. If you want hardcore get a Victory, SubCity, or Epitaph comp. I prefer the PunchDrunk, SubPop, or HellCat compilations. As far as punk is concerned I would suggest Choking Victim, US Bombs, Rancid, Beltones, One Man Army, Anti-flag, Fifteen, Chrimpshrine. The list goes on and on... Look up shit by labels on the internet. SubCity is the best out there. Cheap and part of the money goes to different charities and grassroot organizations. Good luck. skull

Personally, if I were going to make a hardcore comp, bands that would HAVE to be on it would be.....
GBH, Discharge, Agnostic Front, Kill your Idols, Kid Dynamite, Paint it black, From Ashes Rise, His Hero is gone, Deaththreat, DS-13, Minor Threat, Black Flag, World Burns to Death, Nerve Agents, Terror, Give up the ghost(american nightmare/nothing), Bad Brains, and The Hope Conspiracy...there are TONS more though, I'm just too lazy to type them out smile

Punk died in '85. Stick with your Blink CDs, they're safe and you always know what you're going to get.

"what kind of music do you usually have here?"

"Oh, we got both kinds, punk and hardcore!"

(with a nod to jake and elwood, and a note to hadees that the use of hardcore as an adjective is quite confusing in this context)

ok, since most people here are of the "hardcore means black flag and minor threat" vein, i'll recommend you some newer stuff.
these are probably the best hardcore records released in recent memory:

converge: "jane doe"
every time i die: "hot damn!"
cave-in: "until your heart stops" and "beyond hypothermia"
the blood brothers: "burn piano island burn"
refused: "the shape of punk to come"

evergreen terrace, norma jean, botch, and circle takes the square are also awesome.

sure thing buddy

punk also died in 79, 83, 90, and 98
the problem with all that nonsense is that its clearly not dead yet, so get over it
its a kind of music, and people are still playing it, so its clearly not dead

Not that anyone is counting but "Cold Blue" by The Hope Conspiracy is probably the best modern hardcore album ever....that or Bane's Give Blood. As for Converge and Cave-In...great metal/hardcore stuff.....but not really hardcore in the pure essence.

i fucking love Cold Blue, and it's definitely up there with American Nightmare's "Background Music" as the best personal/heartbreak hardcore albums.
generally, though, i favor a more political approach, so i'm gonna have to say "Vengeance" by Tragedy is the best modern hardcore album, followed by Tear It Up's "Nothing from Nothing"
