The new album is coming out in the next few days; I'm looking forward to it. The whole thing's in B flat Major
I'm interested to hear how they pull that one off.
Awful, awful band. They will never get a penny from me, nor a second of my attention. Totally unprofessional, egotistical fuckoffs.
As a DJ at a local college station, we were host to the Nokia/CMJ/MTV Advanced Warning tour earlier this summer. On the bill, Mooney Suzuki, Ravonettes, Longwave and White Light Motorcade.
After arriving on campus and seeing the venue in which they were supposed to play, the Ravonettes cancelled. Then proceeded to call the other bands and try to convince them to cancel as well. Why? There was no lighting rig. And the station didn't have $5000 vocal reverb equipment on hand. All of which they had be notified of prior to booking a show at the university.
Upon hearing of the 11th-hour cancellation, I wandered over to their opulent tour barge and inquired as to why they felt the need to back out at the last minute. OK, OK, I think I had a few more choice words for them.
Incidentally, White Light Motorcade was the only band that had the guts and integrity to buck the tide and play the show.
Here's an account from my buddy Tyler, Program Director, who was the liason between the tour people and the station/university.
"Hi everyone,
Many of you have been calling the station asking what happened to the Advance Warning Tour with the Mooney Suzuki, Raveonettes, Longwave and White Light Motorcade.
"First of all I would like to give all our respect and support to White Light Motorcade. Despite a lot of pressure from The Raveonettes to cancel, they felt it wasnt right to bail out on the show at the last minute, and they were the only ones to step up and play. To them, I give my full appreciation, and I wish them luck and success. On April 6th, they showed KSCU and I what amazing people they were. Words cannot express my gratitude.
"I would also like to take the time to thank all of the CMJ, Nokia and MTV people who stuck it out as well. We appreciate their efforts, especially Matt Malley, who was gracious through it all, even donating a few dollars to help make up for the lost money we incurred that night.
"Now on to what happened. The Raveonettes came to the show and had very bad attitudes from the beginning. We had already told them well in advance that we did not have a huge budget for the show and that the stage was portable and we had no lighting rig.
"However they proceeded to make a huge fuss, and demand that we rent more equipment on the day of the show. Wanting to make things smooth we went to Guitar Showcase (they were really great by the way) to rent the equipment. While we were there renting, they cancelled their performance [during an on-air interview, no less!] . So we ended up spending money for no reason.
"Meanwhile they called the other bands that were on their way to the venue and told them that the place was a dump and they should not play. Longwave and Mooney Suzuki apparently didnt want to play anyway since they never even had the decency to show up or call.
"White Light Motorcade came a short while later, saw the venue and said they had played worse places on the tour, and they still wanted to play if we could find some local bands to play.
"My argument with the Raveonettes statement about the venue being inadequate is that if it was so bad why did White Light Motorcade play? They [WLM] said it was a little thrown together (like KSCU!), but they liked it and we treated them well.
"The Raveonettes also specifically called the other bands to try and torpedo the show. To me, this was unforgivable. At least they could have let the other bands get here to make the choice themselves. Unless of course they had no intention of coming at all. Who knows?
"White Light Motorcade later told us The Raveonettes called them as well and made the place sound awful, but they were close enough to come and check it out themselves. They thought the Raveonettes had greatly exaggerated the situation so that everyone else would cancel, so as not to make themselves look like to only ones with a rock star attitude.
"So due to The Raveonettes Rock Star attitude, and Mooney Suzuki and Longwave not giving a crap about their fans, or the people who try to put a show on for them, KSCU lost quite a bit of money, and everyone walked away a little disillusioned. It could have been much worse except for the great attitudes from the people coming in to see White Light Motorcade and the other bands who filled in as well as White Light Motorcade and the tour people who stayed. So again thanks to everyone for their support. I guess thats Rock and Roll, too bad it has to be filled with Rock Stars. "
Tyler
Keep in mind, all the bands' expenses were paid. The only thing they stood to lose by playing the show is their vanity.
Seriously, Keith. I'm all about the "two sides to every story." I'm in a band. I know what it's like (granted on a smaller scale then the Rs) to show up to a venue that might not meet your expectations.
But I was there. And there is no excuse or rationale for what went down.
White Light played in the "dump" of a venue and kicked ass. Sounded killer.
I saw an interview with them on MTV2 and the girl was a little standoffish. I assumed that it was because she was in the company of Zane Lowe (the biggest crap talker in the business, I swear).
But that just sucks.
Do these bands get signed to larger labels and then forget where they came from?! How they got there?! How there are absolute holes that they HAD to play in the past, and playing a University (which usually draws good crowds, right?) is a million miles from the dives that bands have to play to Noone in the beginning?
The story I've heard is that the Raveonettes never played any shows before they recorded their album. They recorded an album without ever having played a single show.
