The Monks.

This is where punk began.

Four Amercian GI's stationed in Germany that wanted to be a Beach Boys cover band.

A band that used an electrified banjo.

The band that exposed Jimi Hendrix to distortion.

If you hvae not already done so... go buy 'Black Monk Time' at your local indie record store. The first time I heard this record was at a barbeque in Pittsburgh in 1992. It blew me away it was so fresh and raw and new. Then I found out it came out in 1966.

If you have not already done so... go buy 'Monk Time' at your local hipster book store.

Do you remember the punk novelty band in the late 70s who were also called the Monks? They had some great song "Nice legs, shame about her face" heh.

I was wondering which band the title was referring too.. the earlier one is a better band, but "Nice Legs, Shame About Her Face" is a fairly amusing song.

Yeah, sorry for hijacking your thread tuff.

I really like the few original Monks songs I've found on MP3 over the years on Kazaa, but I've never been able to find the original album in my local shops -- and haven't got around to ordering it yet.

Also, interesting story. The one time I met Dick Dale he told me about when he had first met Hendrix in the early 60s. Said Hendrix was absolutely insatiable in his curiosity, wanted to learn everything Dick could teach him about the electric guitar. Also, Dick says he taught Hendrix about feedback.

What's really odd was I had this conversation with him a long time before the whole interviewer gig, when I was just a front desk clerk at a hotel.

Other than bootlegs, "Monk Time" (their only proper album) was officially reissued by Repertoire Records in the UK in 1994, and I think that's still available. Henry Rollins and Rick Rubin also reissued it on their well intentioned but ill-fated Infinte Zero label a few years ago, but that's way out of print.

There's also a CD of an early demo tape called "Five Upstart Americans"...it's pretty good, but "Monk Time" is the one to get.

There was also a UK or German Boot 12 inch that has some bonus tracks.

It's called 'Black Time' for some reason.

have you ever seen that video footage of them playing live on german tv, from like '66, an american bandstand type show??? holy FUCK that is some amazing shit. i think it's on wfmu(wfmu.org)'s "krautrock sampler" that dj fabio put together -- probably still offered as a tchotchke when you give them money (which you should) each year, fyi.

yes, the monks -- right on!!!

though of course punk rock began with charley patton and ended with bukka white; anyone knows that!!!

insert smiley face here.

Dick Dale oughta be castrated for playing that jag off shit he plays nowadays. At least Link Wray is still a punk.

The Sonics for sure "We were nasty. Everything you've heard people say about us is true." - Larry Parypa.(lead guitar).
Link Wray would fuck them both up with one arm tied behind his back though. Switchblade.....
