I am doing a field research report on discrimination against modified people in the workforce, so I thought SG would be a great place to gather data.

I have two SHORT surveys consisting of mostly yes or no questions. It will literally take a minute or two and would be a huge help.

There are two seperate surveys. One 10 question survey for people WITH body mods and one 5 question survey for people WITHOUT body mods.

Thank you so much for helping out, and please copy and paste the questions and answers here, not in my journal. THANK YOU smile

SURVEY #1 FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY MODS:

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)?

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details)

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")?

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities?

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job?

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods?

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect?

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities? All of mine aren't visible, and I've gone that route for the exact reason you stated here.

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it? One of the secretaries had visible arm tattoos, and it was never an issue. I think neck and hand tattoos would probably would disqualify one from employment. office work at a university

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it? see answer two

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position? yes

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal? I see no reason why superficial modifications should ever disqualify one from employment. I would support a non-discrimination law if one was proposed. I would think that the statement of a place being an EOE would already protect people with mods, but I realize that employers can easily state that employment was denied on other grounds.

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?

********************************************
Nah. I just never had a burning desire to do it.
********************************************

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

********************************************
I am a computer programmer, so we are a quirky lot anyway. I can say with relative certainty that any job I have ever had would have been ok with it.
********************************************

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

********************************************
Maybe when I worked as a waiter when I was in college perhaps.
********************************************

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

********************************************
Nah. In this field, its all about experience. Seriously.
********************************************

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

********************************************
No. Its ok to have a dress code in my opinion. If you get a body mod, you accept this limitation.

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)?

Yes.

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details)

Yes. At Starbucks. I know, I know, down with corporate coffee shops.... but they had benefits out the ass and free coffee. Anyway, I guess they have a policy on body mods, there aren't any.

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")?

I have been asked to put the clear thingies in my lip at the job I'm at now (Waitress) when I had two lip piercings. But I noticed they let girls with nose rings keep theirs in so I took one out and put a hoop in the other side of my lip. Hey, they let them have theirs...

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities?

Maybe if I wanted to do something in business, but I don't, so I don't really care. (Starbucks doesn't count cause they suck)

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job?

I'm sure with some jobs it's a factor.

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods?

Nope.

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

When I'm working in the kitchen at ANY place, they couldn't give a shit. No one sees me so what do they care.

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

If you count my waitress job right now. But I think they got over it.

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect?

Not at all.

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

I guess it depends on the employer. If the employee doesn't have to work directly with the customers then it shouldn't be a problem. If not, then the employer should have a say in what their customers see.

3. I have to wear plugs and not rings in my ears at my current job, and actually had to at my last job too. facial hair is more of an issue for most employers (i count this as a quasi mod because it took awhile to grow)
4. Absolutely
5. yes
6. yes
7. my current one, but only because it is so small (3 people work there)

10. Yes, I actually wrote a paper arguing for including modifications under the Equal Opportunity Employment act, its not all that good, but I did some research and stuff, if you'd like it, I'd be more than happy to email it to you. like i said, its nothing mind blowing, but its another piece of information smile

1. No

2. No

3. Yes, at a restaurant and a gas station. The would make some execptions as long as they were covered and not noticable.

4. I think it depends on the job. If it is a job dealing with customer service, then yes I think I would probably get the job and it would have something to do with that.

5. No, I think business owners and managers should be able to hire whoever they want. I think they should be able to pick who they want and pick by any criteria
they want.

1. Does your decision to not have body mods have anything to do with its effect on your professional life and job opportunities?

Mine are not visible, other than pierced ears, and it has everything to do with my professional career.

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

I did QA in a circuit board factory for a while. They didn't mind tattoos, and piercings were limited to studs/barbells for safety reasons.

The pizza place I managed was okay with tattoos, as long as they weren't offensive (swastikas, etc). Facial jewelry had to be removed or covered with a Band-Aid, and hoops were not allowed -- also for safety reasons.

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

I work as a managing editor.

While not strictly forbidden, my current employer would frown upon facial piercings; although, they seem okay with tiny nose piercings with jeweled studs instead of rings. I'm sure they'd be taken aback by labrets and such, even though it's a fairly liberal company.

They certainly would not allow visible mods during client meetings, and I can understand their reasons for that, given our clients. The new dress code specifies "no visible tattoos".

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person if you both applied for the same position?

Assuming we have the exact same education, skills, experience, interview personality, test scores, essays, etc?

As far as my field is concerned, yes.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

This is a tricky, subjective area. I don't believe in discrimination in any form, but I'd be hard-pressed to listen to a presentation from a person with a huge "Fuck Whitey" tattoo on their forearm. "Body mods" is pretty general and allows for a lot of room. This would need some work, and who decides which mods are allowed?

Bottom line: Yes, I think discrimination in any form is stupid. Will making a law against it work? Do they ever work? I may be a bit jaded, but I see study after study proving employers find other ways to discriminate, withhold equal pay, and so on. I think it's a worthwhile law, considering how many people have mods nowadays, but it would be too easy for an employer to find some other, legal reason to deny a person a job.

SURVEY #1 FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY MODS:

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)? Yes, my tongue ring, and if the shirt is small enough, you can see one of my tats.

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details) Most definately.

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")? I got my ear pierced when I was 15 and working at tony roma's, and they told me to take it out, or put a bandaid over it, or i should just go home and not expect to come back. So I went home.

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities? Yes.

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job? I think so. Usually, I try to wear long sleeve shirts and put a stud in my tongue before going to interviews, but then again, i have 2 tats on my fingers, and those are hard to cover up.

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods? Yes.

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it? I worked at a pizza place that didnt care. Everybody there had tattoos and tons of piercings. Also at Auto Trim where I was a graphic designer, they didnt care either.

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it? Restaurants unless I worked in the kitchen. Most of the jobs I've had really didnt mind it too much, as long as the body art wasn't offensive or intimidating.

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect? I wish I would have never gotten the tattoos on my fingers, but I was only 15 and I was on acid and did the tats myself with homemade ink and a sewing needle.

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal? Yes and no. Yes because I would have a job now, and it would just make it so much easier for me to get a job. No, because I think that businesses should be allowed to hire people without body art if they want to. I have a friend who is a biker, and he has full sleeves, leg tats, and back tats and all. But he works at a shipping company, so he wears a suit, and it covers all of his tattoos. You would never think he would have any tats until he got out of work.

No.

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

Yeah, pretty much all my jobs. Retail, mail clerk, computer help desk.

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

Not that I know of. At least, at every job I've had people there had them.

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

Depends on the job. Not really for any of the ones I've gone for.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

No. Employers should have the right to expect employees to present themselves in a business manner if the job is such that presentation is important. What's next, a law to make it so I can wear shorts and a t-shirt to any job I want?

SURVEY #1 FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY MODS:

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)? YES

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details) YES . . . I applied for a job w/ a local gas station and was told that I could not have it because of my "excessive" earrings.

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")? YES . . . same situation as above; a few days later the owner called me and said I could have the job if I took out my nose ring and all but one pair of lobe earrings.

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities? YES . . . many schools might view me as unprofessional for having them. How many visibly modded professors do you have?

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job? YES

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods? YES

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it? YES . . . teaching assistant. But, then again, the don't know what grad students look like before they accept us and give us teaching jobs.

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect? NO

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal? NO I think there are too many problems that could arise from it. If we protect modded people, why not fat and ugly people? Does that mean I could be a supermodel? They can't discriminate against me! It would be impossible to enforce and that it would be impossible to draw the line. Seriously, there's lots of racist and rated-R-or-X ink out there.

SURVEY #1 FOR PEOPLE WITH BODY MODS:

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)? YES

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details) I HAVE NEVER APPLIED FOR A POSITION WHERE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE AN ISSUE SINCE MY NECK AND HAND HAS BEEN TATTOOED.

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")?I USED TO WORK IN A 300MILLION DOLLAR A YEAR COMPANY WHERE I WAS ASKED TO WEAR LONG SLEEVES DURIN MEETINGS TO COVER MY SLEEVED ARMS.

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities? YES, BUT TO BE HONEST I GOT OUT OF CORPORATE AMERICA 2 YEARS AGO AND WILL NEVER GO BACK. I FEEL THAT IS WHERE I WOULD BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST, HOWEVER I LEFT THAT ENVIRONMENT FOR OTHER ISSUES, NOT DUE TO BODY MODS.

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job?YES

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods?YES MY PAST JOB PREVENTED ME FROM TATTOOING MY HANDS AND NECK, BUT SINCE I LEFT THAT ENVIRONMENT I HAVE DONE BOTH.

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?THE JOB I REFFERED TO EARLIER THAT MADE ME WEAR LONG SLEEVES DURING MEETINS DID NOT CARE ABOUT MY ART BEING VISIBLE AROUND THE OFFICE, JUST DURING CLIENT MEETINGS. MY POSITION WAS TECHNOLOGY FACILITATOR FOR A NATION-WIDE 300 MILLION DOLLAR A YEAR PRINTING COMPANY. MY CURRENT POSITION COULD CARE LESS. CURRENTLY I AM THE COORDINATOR/MANAGER FOR A CONSTRUCTION COMPANY AND I ALSO RUN MY OWN BUSINESS....I DONT DESCRIMINATE AGAINST MYSELF.

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?ONLY DURING CLIENT MEETINGS WHERE PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF THE COMPANY COULD HAVE A NEGATIVE OPINION.

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect?NO, NEVER SELF EXPRESSION SHOULD NEVER BE REGRETTED

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal? YES, BUT THERE IS A LAW AGAINST RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, AND IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY. HOW COULD YOU PROOVE THAT THE REASON YOU DID NOT GET THE JOB IS BECAUSE OF A TATTOO OR PIERCING. THEY WOULD NEVER COME OUT AND SAY IT, THEY WOULD MAKE UP OR USE OTHER EXCUSES.

Nope. I do not have a high tolerance for pain or for needles.

Yes. The Walton County PD's office. One of the attorneys got a tattoo, but it did not cause any kind of problems.

Yes. The entire company of Winn-Dixie.

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

Maybe. Most people still have an irrational bias against modified people.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

SURVEY #2 FOR NON-MODIFIED PEOPLE:

1. Does your decision to not have body moda have anything to due with it's affect on your professional life and job opportunities?

No.

2. Have you ever had a job that tolerated employees with body mods? If yes, what was it?

3. Have you ever had a job that did not tolerate employees with body mods? If yes what was it?

Yes and Yes, Both as a programmer.

At my last job, I was writing banking software, so we were dealing primarily with bankers as clients. These are typically very conservative people so it would have effected our ability to do buisness if there had been people with visible body mods.

At my current job, I write custom software for TV and racing and various websites. The only clients that ever come to the place I work at don't really care seeing as their clients never see us. So at one point we had a guy working here with a huge cross on his arm, a dagger on his forearm, script covering his leg, and blue spiked hair. He was wearing a short sleeved shirt and shorts when clients came in and no big deal. Others who've worked here have had tattoos or shaved / dyed hair and it hasn't been an issue.

4. Do you think you are more likely to get a job than a modified person, if you both applied for the same position?

I think this depends on the position, at a job like my current one, it probably won't make a difference, at a job like my last one the guy with mods wouldn't have a chance.

5. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?

As much as it would be nice, I don't see it working. There are too many jobs where forcing someone to hire a modified person would be disasterous to their buisness. If you run a restraunt that caters to conservative buisnessmen and old people, how long are you going to be in buisness if your host has 15 piercings in his face?

1. No

2. No, though I don't generally apply with strict employers

3. No, but I have no tats and my only visible piercings are my ears

4. Yes

5. Depends on the job, but if it's your basic corporate gig, definitely

6. No

7. Yes, I've worked at a carwash, two art supply stores, a FedEx warehouse, and a liquor store, and none of them cared (not surprisingly)

8. No

9. No, I thought about that before I got any piercings

10. No, modifiying your body is a personal decision, not a born trait. If you want to have that sort of job, either don't get mods, get them where they can be covered, or stick to those you can take out when the time comes. I am pleased, however, with the growing acceptance of body mods in our culture as a whole.

Hope this helps! smile

1. Are your mods visible even while you are wearing clothing (i.e. facial piercings, hand tattoos, etc.)?
YES

2. Do you feel you have ever been denied a job due to your mods? (If yes, feel free to desribe details)
NO

3. Have you ever been asked to remove a piercing or cover a tattoo for a job? If yes, were you forced (i.e. "take it out or loose your job")?
NO

4. Do you think your body modifications limit your job opportunities?
YES, BUT THE JOBS I'D GET TURNED AWAY FOR ARE NOT REALLY THE KIND OF JOBS I'D WANT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

5. Do you think a non-modified person is more likely to recieve the position if you both apply for the same job?
NO

6. Has your current or past jobs prevented you from getting more mods?
NO

7. Have you ever had a job that was tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?
I'VE WORKED AS A PRODUCTION COORDINATOR, PRODUCTION SECRETARY, WRITERS ASSISTANT AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS ASISTANT. NOBODY HAS EVER TOLD ME TO LOSE THE PIERCINGS.

8. Have you ever had a job that was not tolerant of body mods? If yes, what was it?
NO

9. Given life and job experiences, do you now regret any mods you have gotten due to its social and professional affect?
NO

10. Do you think a law should be passed to make discrimination against modified people illegal?
NO, IT'S SUCH A SKETCHY AREA. SOMETIMES RULES AGAINST PIERCINGS ESPECIALLY ARE IN PLACE FOR THE PIERCEE'S OWN HEALTH AND SAFETY DEPENDING UPON THE JOB. I ALSO THINK THAT BUSINESS HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRESENT THEMSELVES IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER. IT BECOMES VERY HARD TO DRAW THE LINE AT WHAT MODS ARE ACCEPTABLE AND WHAT AREN'T.
