I spent four fucking hours in the dentist chair today, and now my whole face hurts. My jaw is sore, my lip hurts from the dentist finding it necessary to always rest her hands on my piercings, and my mouth is throbbing with pain. And now I have temporary crowns that hurt and are too big and clunky to allow me to close my teeth all the way. I'm not supposed to use them to chew, and it's difficult to chew with other teeth when you can't get them together. It took me a fucking hour to eat a small plate of fries.

So now I'm miserable, and my husband is hundreds of miles away on a business trip, and there's nobody to buy me a Slurpee.

frown frown frown frown

And I have to go back tomorrow. And it's costing me $1900 out of pocket (after insurance).

P.S. I'm phobic of the dentist.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I found that 800mg of ibuprofin was much more effective at controlling the pain than codeine and the like. You might ask your dentist for instructions on how to use it and/or how to alternate the two.

This was prepping for crowns that I have to get over 2 teeth I had root canals on, so including that, I'm paying this fucker way too much. And they suggested plain Tylenol for the pain. tongue

And they kept fucking with me. They'd give me nitrous, and I'd be fine (more or less), but then the nose piece would get in the dentist's way, and they'd take away the nitrous, and I would be in absolute misery, tears streaming down my face.

get a dental discount plan as soon as possible.
i recommend ameriplan. it's not insurance, but it reduces the cost of your dental work dramatically.
my boyfriend has it and for $11.95/mo it makes a huge difference for things like root canals and crowns. check to make sure you have a subscribing dentist nearby first, but really...it makes a big difference. and there's no pre-existing clause or having to wait for benefits to kick in.
good luck. =)

Reading this thread makes my teef/mouth hurt. frown

I hate how I take incredible care of my teeth compared to a lot of people yet they still end up being on the lowest end of the spectrum. Goddamn genetics, I tell you! Stupid soft teeth.. I haven't been to the dentist in about two years now, though. I can't go by myself because I can't drive home afterward. I always get so .. blah. I suppose I should do that. :x

All right, ending this before it gets any longer, haha.

I'm fucking terrified of the dentist.

I have no money, no insurance, and I need my wisdom teeth out. I have no idea what to do, other than keep looking for a job where I can have things like health and dental insurance... preferably the kind of insurance where the dentist knocks you all the way out. I get panic attacks otherwise. Bleh.

I feel bad for denist, though. seriously. I mean, you may not enjoy it, but think about what an important health service they provide to us all. and then think about how many people they have to put up with crying, freaking out, etc. because them on a daily basis, just to make enough money to live, no less. I mean, I know its not personal...but think about it: are you secure enough to not take everything personally, even when intelectually, you know it isn't? Would you take it personally? I know I do/would. Thats why I always try to be on my best behaviour/not freak and keep my teeth in good health...that way my densit knows she's doing a good job... biggrin

Read this thread title at first as "I hate fucking the dentist" was wondering what the hell it would be about. Glad I misread it though.

I've only ever had to go in for cleanings (and braces at one point... the person slipped at one point and jabbed me with the pliers) but soon I'll need my wisdom teeth removed.

BEWARE OF ROOT CANALS!! If they're in the back YOU DO NOT NEED THEM!! DO NOT LET A DENTIST TAKE YOUR MONEY!
i protested a root canal being done on a back tooth, nobody listened to me. several years later the expensive job collapsed, leaving several chips of my tooth hanging at which point i removed them with eyebrow tweezers...the surface is very smooth now, thank you very much. i have never needed that tooth. i should try to get a refund.
BEWARE!

I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed at once and my mouth was in ridiculous pain. grrr. then my blood clots fell out in my sleep and I had to go back and get new stitches twice!!!! I bled for more than any other patient the dentist ever saw.

When I was a kid, I never had any cavities. I got my first cavity at 15, and we ended up going to a dentist that my father was friendly with. The old man tells me, "He was my dentist while I was in the Army, he's good." So we go down to get the filling, and the fucker just starts drilling! I'm screaming because it hurts like hell, and I'm begging the guy for novacaine, gas, anything. His response: "What for?" I just sat there for about 20 minutes trying to think of anything but the ludicrous amount of pain in my mouth. When it was over, I walked out, and have never been to a dentist since. Moral of this story, NEVER go to an ex-Army dentist, they like to hurt you.

I have some sort of pH-inbalancy in my mouth, so every time I leave a toothbrushing out, I practically get a cavity. So I have like 15, and I'm not eveb 20 years old. None of them hurt though, and none of the drillings hurt, but the sound, oh man I hate that drilling sound! Right now I'm holding back going to the dentist untill I get enrolled at a university, because due to the healthcare system here, students needen't pay more that about 10$ for a drilling. The future is what I'm worried about, so I hope I get rich.

I did 9 years of orthodontistry, had 4 teeth pulled, the wisdom teeth deal, numerous jabbings and pokings, and I had jaw surgery last August. Basically, I'm used to people poking around in there and I really don't care what they do anymore, just as long as they're quick about it.

i have to go to a *new dentist* pretty soon ... which sort of freaks me out a little. in particular, it freaks me out b/c my wife went to her, and reported that our new dentist is just a big jerk. but we're tied in b/c of insurance & making a switch takes time .. so i have to suck it up & go once before we can get the good dentist.... but i've been brushing good, so hopefully all will be well smile
