When I was in grade school I used to love sharpening pencils by hand... because sometimes when I had a #2 pencil I could get the wood to peel off in a little cone like a volcano. And if I was in the pencil sharpening 'zone', I could go around a few times before it would break.

I also used to think it was the coolest thing in the world to be able to punt an overinflated football halfway across the yard, which was only about 10 yards.

And there was this old run down house in my neighborhood that was condemned (sp?) and my friends and I would stand in my backyard and hit rocks at it with tennis raquets... you know, because it was more of a challenge than just throwing them. tongue And after a few years the fire department actually had two trucks come and burn it down under supervision. The whole neighborhood gathered around and watched it, too.

I had like... I dunno, over 50 GI Joe toys. Which wasn't a lot considering how many were available. But it wasn't the fact that I had them so much as that they kept meeting these crazy deaths. One, for example, my friend shoved into my brother's desklamp because we said he flew to the sun and his plane crashed. Well, he stayed there for about an hour before the smell of melting plastic reminded me he was there. His legs were completely melted and I ended up snipping the rubber band and just keeping his torso. His character, from that day out, was always the one who got stuck in quicksand when we played, since he had no legs. We tried making a wheelchair out of Legos but it never worked that well because he kept falling out.

Not only did I watch Muppet Babies, but I always secretly hoped that one day they'd show Nanny and that she'd be cute. I also had crushes on the redhead from Jem, Cheetara from Thundercats, the chick with the invisible cloak from the D&D cartoon, and Lady Jane from GI Joe. There's quite a few others, not all of whom were even human, but that's enough embarassment for now. tongue

I miss jumping on my bike and following the fire truck to some poor ass persons house that was burning. I member one time they brought out a burning pot of beans from the stove....ahh the lil' things. What about playing outside till it was dusk and NEVER wanting to come home. Play forever.

I'd always ride my bike down to these bike trails I wasn't supposed to go to and come home all scratched up from riding through the thorn bushes. Then my mom would make me wash my bike as punishment. But once I was done I'd pour all the soapy water in the yard and watch worms come wiggling to the surface... like some kind of secret revenge on my mom. biggrin

When did it become so complicated to have fun?

I miss my favorite sword fighting stick. It was nice and straight, never broke... it just had this little nub at the bottom that would always give me blisters. On a related note I miss the feeling that the woods in the back of my house went on forever.

oh so many things... so simple and so happy.

I used to use those 5 pound ice blocks as sleds in the summer and went down HUGE grassy hills.. I went back home last November and the hills werent as huge, but still as kickass as ever! And sledding rocked! Espicially when your sled went ultra fast and then tipped you out sideways! YAY!

I lived close to the beach when I was little so we used to go to the ocean on weekends. We would go to New Orleans and do all that culture crap and eat and eat and eat. Playing at outside night while my parents and neighbors drank margaritas on the porch. Not caring about what you looked liked or ate. That first day of summer. Those last few days before school ends where you do nothing but have recess and help the teacher clean up. My childhood spent in Mississippi was great. It wasn't until I moved to Indiana that being a kid started to suck for me. Hm... whatever

I was a lot rougher on my bikes than that. There was a school by me that had a huge parking lot that was blacktopped. At the egde of the blacktop where it met the field, there was a little bump of blacktop that was used as a ramp.
Well, about 10 feet from the 'ramp' was a set of monkey bars that we'd try to get our bikes over. NOT while we were on them... we were stupid, not crazy! We'd all take turns riding as fast as we could down the parking lot towards the bump and stand on one pedal on one side of the bike, and at the last minute we'd jump off and let the bike ghost ride into the bump and launch directly into the monkey bars, causing tremendous damage to the bikes. But if you somehow managed to mangle your bike beyond repair, you were like the hero that day! Every kid there was jealous that you put on the best show.

Too bad our moms didn't appreciate it as much when we brought the bikes home. whatever

But yeah, turning your bike over and seeing how fast you could get the wheel spinning was always fun! Plus, when your bike didn't have pedal brakes and you could pedal backwards, oooooooh man was that cool shit!

oh, and school buses. I got to ride one the other day, on the way back from a club, and all kinds of memories came flushing back...

hurriedly finishing my math homework...

trading lunch items...

discussing the finer points of the birds and the bees...

the bumpy roads...

bad country music...

the first time a boy got to second base with me (on the high school math team bus)

flashing people...

I miss having people around that actually cared about me.

I miss life being uncomplicated

I miss being liked.

I miss not being afraid.

I miss everyone that I have lost.

I miss being able to say I'm sorry and it meaning something.

I miss alot of things. most of which would'nt make sense.

at the time I did'nt think I was unhappy, but now I realise that I was.

just running, biking, playing till you had to come home. Playing in the dirt or playing shoot em' up. you could be out all day long and never leave the same 20x20 area and have the time of your life. and getting dirty, you had to get dirty that was the best part.

I miss playing Kick the Can and Ghost in the Graveyard for hours on end and never getting bored, rolling down huge grassy hills, playing Tball and being one of three girls on the team, jumping over the sprinkler, and hell playing with Barbies...you just can't beat playing Barbies all day long with the best of friends.

The first two I completely relate to! biggrin But the third one, the closest thing to flashing I got was getting a peek at some girls' panties while they played hop scotch. Ohhhh how excited I'd get if I even thought I caught a glimpse of panties.

I was NEVER that cool on my school bus. I was the total dork that everyone hated and picked on. I had just moved from Germany. It was so way behind the "times". I was tourtured in the 8th grade. I hated that school and year soooo bad. I used to hide in the bushes till my mom went to work so I wouldn't have to get on that bus. I remember the boys would light my hair on fire and throw massive paper bombs at my head. All the dorky kids, like myself sat at the front of the bus....ohh how I longed to be in the back of the bus. It wasn't till highschool that I finally made any friends.

I miss climbing trees and climbing rocks at the beach and playing in the snow.

I miss being forced to drive around the city with my brother, exploring parts of it we'd never been to, and then later, when we were a little older, taking day trips to other cities and exploring those, and then, a little more later, taking a couple days and going to Vancouver B.C. and exploring there. Well, I guess I miss my brother altogether, and how we could communicate with our eyebrows and we'd start laughing about things that no one else knew were going on.

I miss pretending to be cats, or horses, or dragons etc. on the playground. I was always black with a little white spot on my forehead, no matter which animal.

I miss honesty.

And wearing leggings and putting my hair in floppy side ponytails and wearing bizarrely mismatched outfits, and hot pink tights.

Awww! I so would have talked to you! I was always getting picked on and shit because I would defend the people everyone else picked on! But no one ever tried to beat me up because I was actually damn good at fighting, plus my cousin was in the same grade as me and he was always pretty big. wink
