I weld. Took the class. Love it! And you never know when it might come in mighty handy. Just think of all the possible situations...like shipwrecks.

welding is really cool. the feeling when you are done is a combination of the satisfaction of building something, and "i have joined pieces of steel together using FIRE!!!!"

welding, brazing... one is better than the other, but it all depends on what you need to do with it. welding is good when you need a seamless or fused join and brazing is a bit like gluing metal together with nickel or bronze. by welding you can get something that is more like two sections of metal turned into one.. but it's a bit harder to do. brazing is like the quick and dirty method, for when things need to stick together but won't be under a lot of stress.

also, there's different types of welding... all somewhat dangerous. electric welders (or the ones I used in school) like MIG or ARC run off more voltage than you can get through a standard electrical wall outlet, and I've seen people get that much voltage put through them.

gas welders, the only kind of these I've used a lot is oxygen/acetyline, and I learned that mostly by watching a friend weld stuff for a couple years. the good thing about these is the same setup can be used for either welding or brazing and the torch comes in handy for a lot of other metalworking when you need to get the metal really hot.. I sometimes setup a mini-forge made of fire brick, using the torch as a heat source.... ack. I'm babbling.

just wanted to say that all types of welding and metal joining have their uses, and depending on what you are trying to do, one way is likely better than another. taking a class would be a very good idea because there are a lot of things that could go wrong and kill you/ blow up your house/etc. if you do not know what you are doing... and in a class you might be get to see someone's pants catch on fire

Look over your shoulder. I'm right here.

Go to school, or find a buddy who's a welder. Then go to school. I recommend getting some education in TIG. Any monkey can MIG, but it takes real skill to TIG.

I think welding has been one of the most useful things I have ever learned. I have saved so much money by making and repairing stuff rather than just re-purchasing things.

All I did in art school was make crazy furniture out of steel. Welding is one of my absolute favorite things to do. Nothing feels better than sitting in a corner of your garage for hours behind a mask playing with hot metal.

If all you want to know is the basics a lot of community colleges have good intro classes and decent equipment.

I should smack you upside the head for that. wink Especially for making "Gangstas" a possessive. But I digress...

MIG = Metal Inert Gas. Nowadays, it's more properly known as Gas Metal Arc Welding. Also known as Wire-feed Welding. Hold the gun, pull the trigger, wire comes out, arc is struck repeatedly, and you have a weld. It may be pretty or it may be ugly as sin, but as I said, any monkey can MIG.

TIG = Tungsten Inert Gas. Again, there's a new term. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. In olden, golden times, it was Heli-Arc Welding. This requires two hands & a foot (or a knee). You have the torch in one hand, filler rod in the other, and a foot (or knee or whatever) on the pedal. The pedal controls the current flow in the arc. You strike the arc, make a little motlen pool, dip the rod in the edge of the pool (not too deep, not too shallow, but just right), move the torch, and repeat the dipping. Just do not touch the electrode (almost always tungsten) to the work or the rod. Fouled tungsten = shitty weld.

Ah, TIG, how I wish I knew how.

But alas, the welders cost about 4 times that of a MIG. frown
