I'm sure many of you are familiar with the T-shirts, magnets and whatnot of "designer" Todd Goliath. He "created" such designs as the infamous slogan, "Boys are stupid...throw rocks at them" and various other images which can be seen at Hot Topic stores and on the clothing of uppity teenage girls everywhere.

While perusing a forum I frequent, I came across something...interesting. One poster, David (Jeff) Kelly, noticed that a painting of Todd's that was being displayed in a gallery looked a little familiar.

Todd's painting is on the right. Kelly's comic, Purple Pussy, on the left:

The blatant rip-off has caused a stir in several online communities, such as
Something Positive, Juxtapoz, and of course, Digg.

As if one artist wasn't enough, people have been linking dozens of other images "designed" by Todd, along with their original counterparts. It's gone as far as Nail Bunny, Happy Bunny, and Lenore.

Todds myspace was coinidentally "hacked" and erased once word got around of who's really repsonsible for basically every picture he's ever sold.

Kelly is keeping us nosey citizens updated personally as events unfold via the Something Awful Forums, where he initally posted about his find.

Artists are notorious thieves, but he isn't improving anything...

He is just a copy cat and he is pretty much ruined.

So funny...er, not that he's stealing stuff, that's not funny at all, that makes me see RED. Funny that I read this on Roman Dirge's myspace blog just yesterday. He had a mightily impressive rant about this. I used to have to sell this stuff. I hated it then and this just makes it worse. Having had my writing stolen from me by someone who attempted to get it published, it makes me that much angrier. It's the principal of the matter.

I was just reading Roman Dirge's perspective on this.

He talks about it here.

Planet Karen and PvP Online did something about it too. There seems to be a question as to whether or not he should be sued. Given my dislike for the legal system in general, I prefer the word-of-mouth option. It did wonders for Joss Whedon, now it's the Purple Pussy's turn!

I'd be fine with the word of mouth option, except that this prick's already established and profiting off others' work. While the indy comics people are pretty solidly against him, he's got more pull in the mainstream.

Mind, the rate he's going, he's begging for a class action suit.

Edit: All of the above said, I do see merit in the idea on PvP.

Reminds me of Lichtenstein, who (badly) copied panels from comics and presented it as art, while the unnamed artists of the original comics didn't make a penny off of it.

Although Lichtenstein got much more of a free pass for doing it.

For added fun, Todd's apparently replied to e-mails, accusing Kelly of promoting pedophilia.

I'm inclined to say thats a fake e-mail.....because wouldn't he want to defend himself better than resorting to insults? Maybe explain away what is an OBVIOUS RIP-OFF?

Gah. As an artist, this frustrates me.

i'm firmly of the belief americans sue too much, but god damn, if there's something worth suing over it's someone stealing your work and making money off it.
even if the work is shit. i mean, how the fuck are you meant to realise you were a lucky prick that got rich off no talent when the work dries up and the money runs out, if you never get the money?!

Todd "Goliath" Goldman deserves to be sued, and I'm so happy that his blantant plagiarism is being exposed by more and more people every day.

A whole shit load more examples of stuff he stole...

If you want to support Dave Kelly, check out his website and http://www.shmorky.com He's got some really funny comics up. Nothing about the situation with Todd though.

I'm glad this is all over the internet right now. I can't believe someone would make a living stealing other peoples art like that. What a dick. I hope all this press screws him out of selling more stolen paintings.

Penny Arcade also did a comic related to the issue; their subject is another individual but Tycho mentions the Goldman scandal in his news post.

I liked his news piece about it. Tycho Brahe is a wise man.
