So we have a problem here at home with bugs in the food pantry. It all started when Mom noticed a bag of flour crawling with little, long black bugs. We've been calling them weevils, but a little research shows that they're probably something else.

Mom took the offending flour bag and threw it away, but the bugs haven't gone. They have been worming their way into foil-wrapped bouillon cubes, closed boxes of Rice-A-Roni; all sorts of stuff. I just had to pick out three as I cooked my rice a few minutes ago. puke

What should we do to get rid of these pests? Is there something I can buy to put in there that's safe around food but will get rid of the bugs?

Any advice? frown

Man, I hate those nasty things! The only thing I could do when I got them is I seriously had to throw everything away and clean every cupboard! It sucked.

Now I keep everything in airtight containers and they seem to have gone away, but I do find a stray one every now and again. And then I freak out.

Clean, clean, clean and throw away all opened bags of stuff. That's my suggestion.

Pestilence? Sounds like you need to repent.

Went through this down at my Mom's place . This is the way to go . Get rid of everything not in a can , clean , then seal up the new stuff . Be pure , be vigilant , behave .

It's a thread about bugs in a pantry! It's already EEEEWWWW!

One time I put a bowl of flour in the microwave for 10 minutes hoping it would kill the meal moth larvae infesting it so I could throw the flour away without worrying about the larvae turning into moths and laying eggs in the trash...

I mean, really, those things JUST DON'T DIE... for a really, really, really long time... unless out of desperation you open the microwave door spray them with kitchen cleaner and then turned the microwave on for another 10 minutes...

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
... and when they do finally die from the microwave/cleanser combo, you have a microwave full of these things that have crawled out of the bowl and have climbed everywhere in your microwave before exploding into goo that then cooks in larval shape onto your microwave..

Take everything out of the cabinets and clean them really well. Throw out anything that has the little beetles in them. And by throw out, I mean take it out of your house and put it in the dumpster. Just removing the flour they were originally in doesn't do anything about the adult beetles who got out of the flour. Don't just put it in the kitchen trash. If you want to hang on to any of the untarnished food, put it in airtight containers. I had a problem with them once, the red flour beetle to be specific, and a good cleaning and getting rid of all foods they were in took care of it a treat.

They're certainly not weevils, and are most likely dermestids or flour beetles of some variety, like the ones Shalome posted. They carry no disease that will hurt humans, so don't freak out about that..

Thanks for the advice, all. I can't tell what kind of bug it is based on the photos and images Shalome posted. They are really tiny and slender and all black with two little antennae and six or eight legs. They may be a centimeter or less in length. Maybe half a centimeter.

Tomorrow I guess I'll have to toss everything out and scrub real good. frown I'll invest in some Ziploc bags or something and just seal up boxes of food.

Insects only have six legs. If they have antennae, then they are insects.

Just to clarify, I realize that there are other animals beside insects that have antennae, but it's very unlikely that her flour was infested with lobsters.
