I lived there a few years.

Restaurants to check out
Pho Bac - Vietnamese soup bowls as big as your head for 6$.
88 Tofu House - Good korean food, 24 hour service, was never quite sure of their sanitation, though...
R. Thomas - 24 service, tons of vegan options, good smoothies.
Tamarind - Pricy but awesome thai.
Savage Pizza in Little 5 points - pretty darn good pizza, and pleasantly kitschy decorations.
Vortex - Laid back. Burgers. Kitsch.

Other places to check out
The Buford Farmer's Market - a giant grocery store representing all ethnicities. It's a crapshoot which veggies will be fresh any given day, but if you wander in with a mind to pick up whatever looks good that day, you will not be disappointed.
The War Room - If you're a gamer geek.
MARTA - It's public transportation. It's pretty clean. It doesn't go many places, but it's a great way to get to some.
The rest of Little 5 Points - Collegetown, Atlanta style. This is where you're going to find your health food groceries, your fetish clothing, etc..

Things to skip
The Underground and the Coca Cola museum. You'll end up taking visitors there at some point and you really don't need to go more than once.

Have you been to Charlie Brown's Cabaret? I used to go to Backstreets all the time and love Charlie Brown. I want to know if it's the same sort of bawdy drag show in the new locale.

The best thing Atlanta has going for is diversity. The worst are traffic and the drinking laws.

If you have never been here, there are tons of interesting things to do. Just be prepared to drive for 30 minutes to get anywhere.

Understatement!

Atlanta has a great local music scene, but, oh wait, EVERY GODDAMN AWESOME VENUE KEEPS GETTING CLOSED. mad

The aquarium is open! Yay! biggrin

Um um... It's not a very under-21 friendly city, sadly. =/ There are still some cool places you can go though.

Kenny's Alley/Underground blows ass.
Theres a lot of porno stores though, like, everywhere.
Worst. Traffic. Ever. On narrow little tiny roads, with potholes that will assure you that the dinosaurs died out due to meteors hitting the earth.

Stuff is kind of a pain in the ass to get to, but when you get there, theres a lot of stuff. Exit 248c will be your friend.

Edity: I'd be more than happy to show you around, I've got an awesomely flexible work schedule. I get "misplaced" easily though... shocked

i just moved to augusta but there's a free day shuttle to atlanta from the post nearby, so between that and my car i'm looking to be up that way for socializing and shopping.

i just put up the event of the december 10th fetish flea market in atlanta... it's $4 to get in and could be fun wandering about window or real shopping while chatting, anyone up for it?

Great thread! Anymore suggestions? I'm moving to Atlanta sometime around jan/feb.

I was checking out roomates.com, looking for somewhere to live for a few months before I get a more permanent situation.

Any neighborhoods in particular that I should stay away from?

I keep hearing bad things about the traffic, is it terrible at rush hour or all day long?
