I'm lost

MAY 01, 2006 11:43 AM

Last week the Senate Republicans told America they were going to get $100 checks to offset those high gas prices. Wow! A whole hundred dollars! Frist’s office came up with the $100 number, calculating that the average driver would pay about $11 per month in federal gas taxes over nine months.

But the people for whom the money was intended are a little down on the idea. A surge of calls and e mails have hit the Senator’s offices. Many of the callers say this is obviously pandering during an election year.

Angry constituents have asked, "Do you think we are prostitutes? Do you think you can buy us?"

Actually, yes. That was exactly what they thought. Even recently arrested drug addict Rush Limbaugh was not amused.

What kind of insult is this? Instead of buying us off and treating us like we're a bunch of whores, just solve the problem.

But the Senators say this is just the start of their big plan. They also want to create new incentives for the oil industry to increase its refining capacity and for consumers to buy hybrid cars. As well as drill the fuck out of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. They would impose an accounting change forcing oil companies to pay higher taxes on fuel sold from stockpiles. And last but not least, they would also give the executive branch new authority to set fuel standards for cars. Because the White House is all about high fuel standards on cars.

I'm glad people are calling them out on this. Seriously. It's not something that we can expect anymore, sadly enough.

(Ha. Fucking idiots. How long would $100 worth of gas last someone again?)

I believe I could drive to the bank to cash the check and back on it. Maybe.

wow, that article is fucking absurd (as is the main one you're reporting on.)

I can't believe they actually thought that would work.

Man, why didn't they keep their mouths shut? Wouldn't getting $100 without being bought by it been best for everyone? I could use an extra $100.

some douchebag from Rhode Island, I think, wants to tax hybrid cars higher to offset the reduction in gasoline taxes the state would get.

Do you know who? RI's amazingly corrupt, but it's really more about local special interests than general big business, and that doesn't really sound like any of our politicians. Except maybe Jim Langevin, he's a bit of a sell-out.

I'm surprised that anyone's complaining considering how well the $300 "surplus" checks we got 5 years ago were received. It gives me a bit of hope. Not much, but a bit.

yeah, those cars are toooootally worth the ~$8,000 jump in price for a hybrid motor. lol. how long would it take to save that in fuel costs? 15 years? not to mention the huge hike in insurance costs due to the rarity of the parts. what a savings! lol

why don't they just stop taxing gass? that would save about $ .50 at the pump right away, and they could implement that now.......

more of trying to cater to both sides of an arguemnet; every special interest, instead of fixing the fucking problem......

I put about 13 gallons into my car every week, I think. At $2.75/gallon, I spend $35.75. If the 60 mpg city figure is correct, it would cost me one quarter of that, saving me $26 and some change every week. At that rate, it'd take me a bit less than six years to save $8000. I don't know, that sounds pretty good to me, especially given how new commercially available hybrids are.

Well it depends on how much you drive. The person I know who has one was spending a hundred dollars a week on gas. Now spending about half that. So it would be more like 3 years. As for your insurance claim, I'd like to see some actual data to back that up, I just asked him about it and he pays about the same for insurance than as does for either of the family's other two vehicles. Not to mention some people actually prefer a hybrid for nonselfish reasons.

I think it's a pretty good alternative. If for some reason I had to drive (which I dount will ever happen) I would choose something like this.

As hard as it is for us in America to think of anything but our own individual what's in it for me consumerist "stuff", it may be that there are savings beyond this.

actually its about 3 thousand more depending on the package you buy. three thousand more than other similar cars. like the toyota matrix. and yeah, i'll spend the extra money cause i like the damn car better. also, a hike in insurance? that doesn't fit with all the information i have gotten.

and, the hybrid was created for emissions... gas mileage is just a bonus.

oh, i also wanted to add that this year the federal government also gives a three thousand dollar rebate for bying a new hybrid vehicle... so that kind of evens it out.
biggrin
