The word is that Marvel: Ultimate Alliances will have 140 damn characters, and 20 of them will be playable. The action-RPG is coming out this fall for almost every system you own, and should play like Raven Software's last game, X-Men Legends.
We won't know a ton more about the game until E3, but an Activision representative said,
"Marvel: Ultimate Alliance delivers a new twist on action/RPGs where players' actions and choices ultimately determine what happens to the Marvel universe."
Usually, a statement like this means the player's actions will dramatically affect nothing more than a pointer's position on a slider bar with a skull on one side and a happy face on the other. But judging by how good X-Men Legends 2 was, and the workaholism it requires to jam 140 characters into a game, we can count this being awesome.
Yeah, i think the last bit of the post was sarcasm...and not just regular sarcasm, unbridled horrid net sarcasm >.< It was just so thick you missed it.

20 playable characters? Hell, Street Fighter 2 Turbo had like fourteen. Booooo.
Seriously. What kinda crap is this? There are thousands of characters in the universe, and you can only play as 20? I mean, granted if they put many more in, they'd be more or less clones of other characters with different skins thrown on them, but jeez. That's not even gonna cover all of the big stars.
140 characters & only 20 playable...
We'll see when it comes out I guess... If it turns out to be a shit storyline it'll blow no matter how many characters they have, playable or not.

What's odd about 20 playable characters and 140 characters total? That's a whole lot of villain ass to kick.
And I imagine that a lot of the X-Men characters won't make the cut since that'd be kinda redundant.

Not necessarily villain. You got all those NPC's that simply go "That's right!" here and there, saaaay... about 100 times (which is pretty much what the majority of characters in Legends II were)... And blammo - you're able to brag as much as they're doing now.
I'd like 4 characters that are sharply defined and have very different roles and power sets. Or however many you can have in your group at any given time. Any more playable characters than that is a waste, especially if they're not much different than the others (like in X-Men Legends), and especially if you have to individually grind them levels.
