Because people can't predict the future and/or are stupid. If rates are notably higher now compared to some past time, I suspect it's because there's less social pressure to remain in unhappy marriages.

Honestly, you want the truth? I am an emotional girly girl! I belive in true love and all of that hopeful idealism. It breaks my heart when I see people split up.
I am so afraid of getting divorced and I am trying to figure out how to avoid it.

My solution; become a polyamorist, marry your best friend because you enjoy each others company.
That way you get to have your cake, and eat it, and eat some other cake, and eat, and throw icing everywhere, drink some wine, and have a great time.
Of course, you'd have to be able to abandon ownership of your partner. It takes a certain kind of fortitude to do that, considering that most of western society spends a great deal of time reinforcing the idea that marriage is partner ownership.
