One of the lawless gangs attacking a group of Army Corps of Engineers contractors was destroyed by an escort of New Orleans Police.

Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people, killing five or six.

Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.

They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.

None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.

An earlier report erroneously cited the police with killing the Army Corps of Engineers contractors.

With the lack of power it may take some time for this fatal example to become widely known in New Orleans. More violent confrontations are likely to happen as order is restored.

I really dislike using the term "destroy" when talking about killing people, it bothers me. whatever

I'm not say that these guys weren't bad guys that needed to be shot, but I destroy the fort I made in the living room, or the evidence I burnt up in the fireplace, not people.

Ya know...I tried watching "Scanners" a while back. Other than this scene that movie was way lamer than I remembered it to be.

Yeah. Like in Iraq.

Pentagon Reality "We bombed a terrorist hideout today. 37 fighters were killed."

Actual Reality "They bombed a wedding. 3/4ths of a village were killed, including the bride, groom, their parents, the grandparents, cousins to the fourth degree, and the photographer."

They do'nt need to lable them any thing because they are quarantined to the state and all media is controled and un willing to say what is realy going on over there so the media just shows video/pictures of the same disaster air shots over and over.I doubt that much will be done for those who made it to the superdome. What I ment by whats realy going on over there is that it would cost to much money for the goverment to care about saving those people so they use the event as a photo op.

Jesus Christ is the echo chamber on "high" today? I'm pretty goddamn understanding of the causes of all this and have said so repeatedly, but really folks, not everything is a government conspiracy. There really was an armed group and they really did fire at the engineers, who incidentally were trying to keep New Orleans from drowning, they really were shot by police and there really were media present and there really are pictures.

If you want to protest government brutality, there are plenty of things to occupy you, but really this isn't one of them.

Im with this guy, i mean, why the hell was an armed group of new orleans residents shooting at a group of engineers trying to fix their city in the first place? Thats the main thing everyone whos cried on this post so far has forgotten.

Ive heard about nothing good coming out of that city so far. The hurricane is over. These are no longer the effects of Hurrican Katrina. Now its the effects of the atrocity of humanity tearing itself and the city apart.

Why is it that everything you say makes sense?

Isn't it funny when people who live nowhere near N.O. tell us about how it "really" is there? Because they're there? They're the ones who just evacuated and have nothing to do but watch all the news channels 24/7. They're the ones who are getting first hand reports about what's ACTUALLY going on from their friends who couldn't evacuate. Their girlfriends' bosses are obviously NOPD. Them, they know. Us. . .how could we possibly know better?

I think the differentiation here is that the police were not out to negotiate or reduce tensions. These asshats attacked people trying to aid in the relief effort and there is only one acceptable response to that type of threat at this time.

Interestingly, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau was extolling the virtues of overwhelming force in retaking the convention center. Not a shot was fired and nobody was hurt.

Part of the reason this firefight took place was not because the New Orleans PD were looking for a fight, but because they were so isolated that they could not avoid the fight. Once the shooting started, the police had a limited range of options. Due to the flooding, the police probably did not have a realistic retreat available; they litereally had no bridges behind them.

This incident also shows is that having a gun and a willingness to use it does not make you powerful. Having the training to use a weapon in an organized fashion with others who have the same goals as you do makes you powerful. I suspect that the police would have done about as well if they had been armed with black powder rifles as if they had AR-15's.

Not everything is a government conspiracy... HA! Next you're going to be telling us that the levees broke because of the hurricane. We all know, once the government realized most of the people that were still in New Orleans are black, they broke the levee in hopes of drowning them all. Now, they are trying to starve the ones that are still there and shoot any that are trying to get out.
