George Clooney wants to bring some of the "old Vegas" style back to the Las Vegas Strip. He and his business associates are planning a "classy" casino and resort, where a dress code will be strictly enforced, much like the dress codes at many casinos in Europe.

The Las Ramblas casino will cater to high-end clientele -- none of the riff-raff you'll find at New York New York or Caesar's!

At the Las Ramblas, people in the 250K tax bracket will be affixing those sanitary paper strips across the toilet bowls, wistfully imagining what it would be like to sip a stiff martini with the well-dressed high rollers at the craps table. This project isn’t about making money, it’s about class, about the spirit of Old Vegas. If Clooney and his pals were merely concerned with maximizing profits, would they be building incredibly expensive animatronic replicas of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra to prowl the casino floor, weaving from table to table and cold-cocking any mouthy gambler bold enough to complain when they get fresh with their tomatoes girlfriends? We think not.

Gambling industry specialists in Las Vegas think this is a terrible idea, and that no self-respecting millionaire would wear a jacket and tie to gamble. They believe that to be successful, a casino has to be open to everyone.

Considering the Strip is designed around showmanship and displays of wealth, what's wrong with asking the audience to take part in the show? I dunno, sounds like a fun place to dress up and visit to me, although you certainly wouldn't find me at a high-stakes table there!

I've noticed that anytime someone uses the word "classy" in the description, it rarely is.

what do you think Mr. President?

now that's classy

I thought thats kinda what The Bellagio and Wynn are supposed to be.
The specialists are right. All the high rollers I brushed shoulders with when I was down there were in khakis and golf shirts. Its called 'being wealthy enough not to have to look it'.

That said, it might be fun. I like having a chance to dress up (gazes sadly at all her mouldering party dresses)..

And you have to remember what "successful" means in Vegas talk. Maybe Clooney doesn't need or want to make the 800 million to 1 billion dollars a year in revenue like the MGM does.

I think it's a cool idea and I'd gamble in a tux.

The true whales and high rollers wear very casual clothes. I used to work at the Rio in Vegas and we had one whale that used to come down from his suite in the morning and have coffee and a bagel wearing slippers and a bathrobe. Of course no one ever said anything. He was playing a few million over a couple of days.

The point is that the people with the real money usually want to be casual and laid back. Clooney's casino would push away the regular gambers and the whales and be stuck only with the wannabees. In this case he would loose his ass and I don't think any respectable casino investor would touch this.

"Class" is what doomed Vegas, if you ask me. Parts of downtown are still OK.
