The second biggest story after Hurricane Katrina and the devestation left in her wake, is the price of oil and the possibility that Bush might release some of the stratefic Oil Reserves.
The words Global warming have not even been uttered by any mainstream news analysts although there is more than enough evidence to at least allow speculation as to whether or not climate change is affecting hurricane season. So basically, after an extreme weather event, perhaps precipitated by our irresponsible and unsustainable use of Oil, how ironic is it that the first decision of George Bush, might be to release oil reserves to keep the supply of oil artificially high and the price artificially low.

But of course, Bush, who has yet to fully acknowledge climate change or make any committments to repair our damaged eco system, would never accept that the hurricane had anything do do with global warming

Okay, seriously... I hate Bush as much as anybody, but do we really have to literally indict him for the weather? Furthermore, there are some very good reasons for not letting the price of gasoline double or triple in a week, namely that whole "entire U.S. economy grinding to a halt" thing.

Because hurricanes form over warm ocean water, it is easy to assume that the recent rise in their number and ferocity is because of global warming.

But that is not the case, scientists say. Instead, the severity of hurricane seasons changes with cycles of temperatures of several decades in the Atlantic Ocean. The recent onslaught "is very much natural," said William M. Gray, a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University who issues forecasts for the hurricane season.

i can't be the only person laughing at a guy from colorado talking about hurricanes (not in any argumentative sense, it's just funny).

the "natural cycles" argument is going to get reallllly tired in a few decades when all these "cycles" don't end when they're supposed to. of course by then the machines will have taken over, and we'll be able to use the harsh climate to our advantage by rusting and freezing their mechanical bodies. ha. take that robot overlords!

I'd like to see the heads of the Bush administration on pikes lining the road just as much as any other good American, but they ain't got nothing to do with hurricanes. That's just good old nature at work.

Well, we really have no real handle on the scope of global warming.

We know that the temperature is rising, and it has been for a while. We have no idea if it's a natural cycle, or some wierd anomaly, or human-caused. It may be that we have been "warming up" ever since the last ice age, and then once the polar ice caps melt, well have another ice age.

That makes about as much sense as when Falwell blamed 9/11 on feminists and homosexuals.

Yup, Jerry Falwell and I are so much alike! I get that all the time.

Um, I made a winky face. It wasn't intended to be a serious remark.

sounds like a cycle to me, starting in an ice age, ending in an ice age...full circle kinda deal, maybe? we'll all be long dead before it ever happens....then the human race will be wiped out, the earth can purify it's self through freeze or fire, and life can start all over again, just like mother nature hitting the restart button, it happened with the dinosaurs when they rulled the earth, it'll happen to our species at some point, weather we do something about it or not.

Good article smile

I do hate Bush, but these Hurricanes are not due to Global warming, and I don't see how you link global warming to Bush. Why not blame Ford for making the car avilable to everyone? or how about Ali Naimi for selling oil?

I think most people have missed the point in a rush to assume i was blaming Bush for this Hurricane, It was entirely about his response to it and the deafening silence in the media in relation to any talk about climate change.

Public discourse needs to concentrate on how we limit the damage we do to our eco system, not how do we keep the oil economy lubricated until it collapses as supply dwindles.
I don;t have an objection to discussing the economic aspect to this hurricane, but i am extremely pissed off that the ecological aspect has been deliberately ignored

Yes, Bush's ignorance concerning global warming is reprehensible, but there was nothing he could have done during the last five years to stop a fucking hurricane. Surely he should admit it's a serious problem in need of immediate attention, but it's not like it began after he took office. I can't believe I'm sort of defending that guy. whatever

Also, the SOR has about 700 million barrels of oil in it. That's about 70 days worth. How exactly is this supposed to help gas prices overall? Is a sharp drop in prices expected in the near future?
