Talk about your "green architecture"... The winner of this year's Cradle to Cradle International Design Competition is a house that is built around spinach. This example of sustainable development creates as much energy as it uses, recycles water, uses renewable-resource building material, and is designed around building a sense of community between the people living in and around the complex.

FutureFeeder.com summarizes the design:

The winning entry to the Cradle to Cradle C2C Home Competition is an incredible single family dwelling by Matthew Coates and Tim Meldrum that goes right to the core fundamentals of the Cradle to Cradle principles. Not only does the building run a photosynthetic and phototropic skin made with spinach protein, but it also produces more energy than a single family’s needs, allowing the excess to be distributed to neighbors. This radical shift, from centralized energy systems today, fosters community interdependence as neighbors benefit from the resources of others.

No word, however, on cost and actual feasability of the project. Green design projects like this, however faniciful they might seem at the moment, may be where we're headed in the future out of necessity.

Interesting. The low-tech design features, at least, ought to become commoner. And I like the "Ideas" page.

That's awesome smile I like the idea that excess power is shared with neighbours.

This is like the cool stuff that I imagine for the future: Buildings that collect and reprocess water, energy gathered from people just walking up and down the street, and roads that blend into instead of rip apart the scenery. I really hope this stuff becomes commonplace before I die.
