Apple has basically admitted that their first, second, and part of the third release of the iPod came with defective batteries. They agreed to a settlement in a class-action lawsuit on Thursday, which was approved by a judge.

The settlement applies to consumers who purchased an iPod model on or before May 31, 2004 and saw the charge of their iPod battery drop to four hours or less on a third-generation iPod, or five hours or less on one of the first two generation models.

Under the settlement, owners of either a first- or second-generation model are entitled to $25 cash or $50 credit at the Apple store. Meanwhile, owners who actually paid Apple to repair a battery in one of the players will be entitled to up to half of that cost back.

Owners of third-generation iPod models are entitled to a free replacement battery if the battery fails.

For third-generation iPod claims, the postmark deadline for submitting a claim is two years after the original purchase date of the iPod or September 30, 2005, whichever is later. For all other claims, the postmark deadline for submitting a claim is September 30, 2005.

Why do the early adopters of technology always get fucked? Makes me glad I'm too poor to buy every gadget I want as soon as it hits the market.

there was a website about this a while ago, I remeber trying to tell my mum to not buy into the iPod, but her stupid friends all advised her to do it because of the iTrip thing.

I prefer creative instead, better customer support and you dont have to pay as much.

Oh, and you are less likely to be robbed when ppl dont see gleaming white ear peicies.

I would have seriously considered purchasing an ipod if it weren't for the fact that the battery isn't replacable.

rechargeable yes... but even rechargeable batteries will eventually stop taking a charge, and when that happens you can't replace the battery on an ipod.

hence, buy a ten dollar set of headphones that wrap around the neck and are BETTER than the ipod earpieces, and you don't have to deal with that.

If you have cause in this settlement you should have received a set of forms to fill out and return to Apple. If you bought an iPod through Apple (their online store) you should be able to recall your invoice from the website which is proof enough. In this class action, after being contacted by Apple, you will return the iPod to them. It can be used as, I think, $50 credit (kind of like their tradein policy), have the battery replaced or, God willing, they'll replace the whole thing. I have one that falls into this category... I'm hoping for total replacement.

For anyone looking for more information if they'll entitled, go to the support site of Apple or visit your nearest Apple Store.

iPod batteries can be replaced, and they are pretty easy to install.

Oh? and these batteries you can pick up at any Radio Shack?

What they need is an ipod that will take rechargeable AA, or AAA nihm batteries. Something fairly cheap, easy to find, and easy to replace.

You might be able to get them at Radio Shack, I didn't have any trouble finding them. And a $40 battery that lasts a year or two (or longer) is much better and cheaper and more convenient than an endless stream of AAs (rechargeable or not), in my opinion!

Look at the pot talking to the kettle.
At least he's on topic...
whatever
One our our client's daughter's threw her iPod away because the cost for fixing the battery was almost as much as what it cost for the iPod itself. I bet she'll be pissed upon reading this news!

Ah, another "I'm a much better industrial designer than the best people in the world." thread.

The iPod has a sealed shell to protect it. It is water, shock and dust resistant because its a freaking hard drive. You can, in fact, pick up a new battery very easily. Its a standard Sony battery. There is no reason whatsoever that you should have to be able to pick one up a the Kwik E Mart because its a three year battery. Even the bad batch worked just fine for a year and a half. You don't have to pop out and replace them on the spur of the moment.

All of the other "easier" things have been tried by all of Apple's competitors and guess what? They don't work, they just cost less money. If you want a product thats going to break to save a few bucks, knock yourself out. Me, I'll take my "bad" iPod which is still going strong after having been all over the world multiple times.

Clearly I wasn't very informed on ipods and their batteries. ThatÂ’s just what I needed though, someone to point it out. Thank you for reminding me that compared to all of those industrial designers I'm just an idiot.
