Considering that there was an attempt by
Morgan Spurlock (and others) to show the evils of obesity become a part of the way of life in America, there seems to be more people getting bigger by the day.

In the past year, the adult obesity rate rose in 48 of America's states, and nationally from 23.7% to 24.5%, Trust for America's Health found.

In 10 states, over a quarter of adults are now obese, despite campaigns alerting people to the dangers of over-eating.

And the poll for fattest states are as follows

Mississippi, famous for its calorific mud pie, ranked the highest, followed by Alabama and West Virginia.

I remeber once reading kissBANG's journal and her mentioning over 60% of the adult population are overweight in the US, I didnt take it too much to heart til I read this

Currently, about 119 million, or 64.5%, of US adults are either overweight or obese.

If this trend was to continue, the study also found

According to projections, 73% of US adults could be overweight or obese by 2008, Trust for America's Health warned.

In turn, this would mean many more people with obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, which could cost the nation billions of dollars.

The biggest rises in obesity have been seen in the south-eastern states. Oregon in the north-west was the only one not to see an increase between 2003 and 2004, maintaining a steady adult obesity rate of 21%.

its really tragic though, 6 out of 10 people are fat?

They have SO MANY adverts here on tv sponsored by the goverment saying "take thirty everyday to do some excersize" "Eat two fruit and five veggies a day" " check if you have diabities"

I used to think it was a load of crap and not worth the money, i see in the long run its worth it, if australia doesnt want to become another fat camp.

i'm looking forward to going to america and feeling all thin and stuff. according to those pesky BMI indexes i just went from obese to merely overweight, by the sounds of things i'll be a positive adonis in the south east tongue and if 64% are overweight, i think about 2% must be at the 'proper' weight, with the remainder being skinny emo boys. they're everywhere.

It should be noted that "overweight" doesn't mean "on one's death bed". If someone is muscular, they can still be overweight due to bone structure and muscle mass. I hate scales for this very reason. Hell, a girl who has D-cup breasts may carry as much as ten pounds of extra weight, and it's all breast, not unhealthy fat. I get so sick and tired of those graphs and charts. I know they're meant as a guideline, but some people take them to heart because they don't know any better and end up doing themselves a world of harm.

"Obese", however, is another story. Bad, bad, bad for the health. frown

(Now, don't even TRY to 'pot and kettle' me because I've been taking steps to lose this shit for that very reason -- health. I was 302 pounds last November, and it was the biggest smack in the face I've ever received. I've been dropping ever since then, thank fucking god. No diabetes for me, thanks.)

As a nutritionist about to become a Registered Dietitian, I have to say that whatever way people will take this seriously needs to happen and soon. I would give my perosnal opinion on who I find responsible but it is not really relevant.

more excersize+ sensible eating= larger person becoming biggrin

I can understand how muscle makes some people heavier however there is a clearly emerging trend here. p.S anyone remember those ads in the news saying that obesity was a myth... and it was funded by some very interesting groups.

Oh, I agree completely. I was just off on a tangent.

P.S. anyone remember those ads in the news saying that obesity was a myth... and it was funded by some very interesting groups.

I saw an article in "Scientific American" the other day that was trying to tell people not to worry about their weight so much. It said that obesity doesn't lead to most heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc. Then it went on and on and on before it got to the facts, figures, studies, and sources. The average person (i.e. the person eating at McDonald's every day) would have simply read those first few paragraphs at the beginning, heard what they wanted, and shut the magazine. The set-up was perfect.

You know, I really doubt anyone is unaware of the dangers of overeating. I think most people just don't really care. They may care a bit, enough to try the newest pill or fad diet, but not enough to actually start running and cut the double quarter-pounders and M&Ms out of their diets. If they're going to have a campaign about anything at all, use it to let people know where to get information about responsible dieting and exercise so that whoever does want to lose weight can do it as safely and effectively as possible.

I blame the obesity crisis partially on the proliferation of "low fat" and "low carb" products. I think they create this mentality that people don't need to show restraint in their eating habits. So instead of someone saying to themselves, "wow, maybe I shouldn't eat so many oreos", they just buy the low fat oreos and eat an entire package on the couch watching Judge Judy.

It's all marketing. Food companies can't have people eating in moderation, that would kill their profits.

how about more so it is just people are too lazy PERIOD. I see these moo moo's all over, that is it, just pure lazyness. I blame allot of it on parenting, really fathers and mothers should teach thier children that if they turn in to fat peices of crap that no one is going to want them. We are far too concerned with everyones feelings, instead we need to be more for being honest with them so as that they can have the information that they need. I say keep the pressure on them. oink

Yeah, if your a fat tub of lard I think you need to put the fork down.

It is like my bumper sticker says "Guns kill people like spoons made Rosie Odonell fat." If you are going to deal with a problem go to the source. That is the problem today, we always beat around the bush trying to find reasons that people are the way they are, but stop far short of exanimining the person them self.

I was taking issue with "pressure oink". "Education" seems more productive, and less likely to result in puke or skull

To be accurate, it's more a problem with the US Navy and (my service) the US Air Force. The top brass are trying to instill what they call a "culture of fitness", and things are changing, but I'm still astounded at the number of people I see who are completely, inexcusably, out of shape.

In a recent military publication, I read that the Navy will actually begin offering incentives (pay and otherwise) to get people to meet standards that they were supposed to be adhering to in the first place. whatever

Education is a very very good thing, but at the same time, education is not a motivator, I say go for D. all of the above.
