The problem with KS is that everyone is inbred and from Arkansas - they even pronounce it Ar-Kansas there. Ugh. Glad I moved - some of the dumbest ppl.

i'd say that you're right, except for the fact that in our society, in this day and age: 12 year olds are children. in the past, people had to take on adulthood early. but now you can't do ANYTHING pretty much until you're 18 (legally).

i'd say that that trumps the whole "different values" question. it's not like 10 years ago people were still getting married at the age of 14, either. these "different values" are between 75 and 150 years old. i wouldn't say that a cultural norm that outdated has any bearing on modern culture.

if i say i want to hold slaves, am i allowed to do that too?

Thats a much better point. I will say that if you have strong faith in a religion or a way that you should live your life, and I do mean the person not outside influences, living in a diffrent mannor can cause great mental trauma. We all probably have friends (or are the friend) who are way outside the norm. Pronouncing things when we have sketchy info seems silly. The people and the courts will hopefully address the facts and do whats right.

And the slave thing is just stupid

And the slave thing is just stupid

[Edited on Jul 28, 2005 by bones_708]

how is "the slave thing" stupid? it's a valid question, or at most hyperbole. i'm taking a "value" about 150 years old and comparing it to the current political and social reality. see? many old values aren't that compatible with contemporary situations, are they?

following the beat of your own drummer is one thing: following outdated and archaic social values and mores is quite another.

again, i say: O.o

first off: you didn't say dumb. you said stupid. please explain what you actually mean.

second: you haven't actually given evidence for your position, or at least some elaboration.

third: do you NOT understand the concept of hyperbole?

I have, and Arkansas, too. If you moved to San Antonio for intellectual stimulation you got conned.

I just don't feel it's worth getting into a discussion about. Dumb, stupid, both seem about right to me. wink

I moved to San Antonio to be near my family. But you'd be suprised at how much more intellectually stimulating ppl are when they aren't descended from generations of first cousin marriages

Here's a new article about the subject with more details about the couple.

The couple named their 7-pound, 1-ounce baby girl, born Wednesday morning, Samara Ann Koso, after a character in the horror movie "The Ring."
