I have no use for something like that.

But it's so pretty. . .

Yeah, it's sweet. And Our Father in Heaven, Dvorak, will be pleased.

But... I dunno about you guys but my keyboards get all grimy. The LEDs will be hazy at best after a few months.

Gross huh.

I will argue that This is the best keyboard ever.

This one is pretty nice too.

I'm fully willing to trample both of you for this. I want a keyboard that I can program to switch into a lightshow when the screensaver kicks in.

You're the same type of person that puts LED lights on his cooling fans aren't you?

Just because you can't mod that little Mac thing don't take it out on us. tongue

Nope, the tower should be silent, dark and not take attention from the pretty lights everywhere else. I have been known to put the occasional carton character sticker or tribble on it though.

Who else wants to write a special keyboard driver for the non touch typists in their family where the keys rearrange themselves every time it boots up?

I'm thinking it would be much more amusing to just have it switch the M and N keys every few seconds...

I wish I had learned the Dvorak keyboard. I already type 100-120 wpm with the traditional keyboard. With the Dvorak, though, I could probably type 180-200+. Sigh.

Ok, I haven't read these comments, but the computer that I got in 1995 had a fully programmable keyboard. Sure, I had to actually move the keys to make them match the programming, but if you're going to reprogram your keyboard anyway, that's not such a big thing.
consider me underwhelmed.

well, look at it this way. let's say you're writing a document where you need to use more than one language. you can switch back and forth between the two, and the keyboard will automatically display the new characters.

it would also be nice to have the F keys on my keyboard display their actual functions (or an icon) whenever i change what they do or change applications.

it would be nice for gaming, too, like the quake example they use, since i can never remember what all those damn keys do.

also, it just looks pretty. i can already touch type pretty well, but a glowing LCD keyboard? i want it.

This, if we're going to be honest, is what it comes down to. I was unmoved by the description, but...look at that thing! I can't say I'm going to do any better in Battlefield 2 if the nine key has a picture of a parachute on it, but I'd sure be a happier person. smile

Again, the only advantage is that the keys change automatically. I can print out a keyboard layout...

the glowing will be neat, but if all it took to impress me was glowing, well, I'd be even more broke than I already am.
I'd love to see what price they think they'll bring this to market at...

It's a design for a future keyboard that's going into production.

No, it doesn't exist yet. Yes, it will exist. This is the design for it.

This talk makes me weary.

If there isn't even a prototype in existence, this will probably be something that doesn't make it to market for some reason. Many possible things could create this outcome, but i'll venture the most likely one: Wild underestimation of costs involved in production

If this were some wild technology that was heretofor unseen, then I'd agree with you. However, the components in this mock-up all exist, and there is absolutely no reason why this couldn't be put into production -- there is no tech barrier that has to be breached, there is nothing in this keyboard that is not already existent. There is no massive code shift that would have to take place for this to be put into production. In short, there is no reason to believe that this is vaporware.

The materials required to make this keyboard are relatively cheap and plentiful. If you don't know enough about electronics to see the fact that a keyboard like this could feasibly exist right now in someone's garage workshop, that's cool; but to say this design scheme won't make it to market? Please. We'll see things like this all over the place within the next 5 years, if not sooner.

I'm still more curious as to what it feels like than anything. I find it curious how ergonomics are taking a backseat to much of design these days. For example, it hurts my thumb to use my cell phone's joystick for any extended period of time; its design seems purely aesthetic. And I can't imagine typing on tiny OLED screens will be much fun either.
