The Optimus Keyboard isn't in production yet, but it sure as hell should be. Each key on this keyboard is a tiny display screen, making the keyboard configurable and re-configurable into any layout you want -- including specialized layouts for foreign characters, programs with lots of hotkeys, commonly-used code functions, or games.

Answers to some of the frequently asked questions about the keyboard:

It’s in the initial stage of production.

We hope it will be released in 2006.

It will cost less than a good mobile phone.

It will be OS-independent (at least it’s going to be able to work in some default state with any OS).

Each key could be programmed to produce any sequence.

It will be an open-source keyboard, SDK will be available.

It will most likely use the OLED technology (e-paper is sooo slow).

Keys could be animated when needed.

I will be one of the first in line to get one of these things when they hit the market.

saw this, if it detects what game your playing and changes the keys to the controls set in game then there really on to a winner.

But i feel spilling my coffee because of someones funny IRC comment will be more of a problem smile

Very pretty. Except that this is the greatest keyboard in the world...

The Apple Extended Keyboard II uses mechanical key switches to give you that tactile "click" feel that no longer exists in keyboards today. They don't even make those key switches anymore, and buying a new keyboard with them costs upwards of $100.

You can add all the features you want to a keyboard, but ultimately the most you'll do with it is type. And if that's not a comfortable experience, it's a shitty keyboard.

I'm fully willing to trample both of you for this. I want a keyboard that I can program to switch into a lightshow when the screensaver kicks in.

You're the same type of person that puts LED lights on his cooling fans aren't you?

Nope, the tower should be silent, dark and not take attention from the pretty lights everywhere else. I have been known to put the occasional carton character sticker or tribble on it though.

Who else wants to write a special keyboard driver for the non touch typists in their family where the keys rearrange themselves every time it boots up?

It's a design for a future keyboard that's going into production.

No, it doesn't exist yet. Yes, it will exist. This is the design for it.

This talk makes me weary.

If there isn't even a prototype in existence, this will probably be something that doesn't make it to market for some reason. Many possible things could create this outcome, but i'll venture the most likely one: Wild underestimation of costs involved in production
