I wanted to. I really did want to. I started the first one and thought, "HA! This is just a Roald Dahl knockoff with the tortured abused child with the cruel caretakers after the parents die!!!" Later on, I had difficulty waiting to get home to read them. And I'm an elitest fantasy nerd. I read all kinds of weird shit.
i hated harry potter at first. i thought it was yet another craze involving bratty do-gooder children running through yet another moralistic plot line. i posted fiercely on internet message boards in condemnation, despite having no direct experience, but knowing just enough from the billboards to know that i hated harry potter.
then one night, olivia said, "hey, let's go see that new harry potter flick at the IMAX". she and i are in the habit of seeing movies just to hate them later, so we went. about 20 minutes in, we looked each other in that way you look at someone when you realize for the first time that some deeply held assumption you have is false. your face contorts as it tries to process elation, confusion, guilt, and shock all at once.
all of the books were purchased from amazon later that night, and countless hours of work were lost (sorry sean) to harry potter.
