And cops wonder why they have this growing stigma attached to them. Christ.

The mother pretty much summed it up by saying "being nonverbal should be a clue".

Assholes.

I agree that these guys went over the top. Perhaps they are even deserving of the title, "assholes." There is no disputing it was excessive force. But it's not fair to blame all police officers for the indiscretions of few. Most police officers are good people who use sound judgement. Unfortunately, like in every profession, there are some screw-ups. But let's not generalize.

It was a 17 year old kid, couldn't the cops control him without using pepper spray, a stun gun and a baton?

I agree wholeheartedly, and I'm not blaming all police officers (a good friend of mine recently became one). I apologize if I worded it wrong, but I wasn't by any means saying all cops do this. All I'm saying is many people do attach that stigma to cops, and this is why.

I know how the responses to this are going to go BUT...if it was a 17 year old on crack or something planning on breaking into a house or doing worse to the residence then people would be like HEY I wish I could have beat him. Maybe the cops did over react but they had no way of knowing the kid was autisitc...they just knew they were dealing someone who could have posed a threat.

Whatever, it's 2am and it's not like a 17 year old is a child. Sounds like he resisted a great deal to me. I think it's pretty understandable.

Agreed, I have had to subdue an autistic guy at work, and that bastard put up one hell of a fight! If the guy was so unable to care for himself, maybe the mother should have kept a closer eye on him. If I was a cop and some guy I thought was a prowler came running strait at me, I'd take him down as quickly as possible too.

It does?

"As three deputies approached the house, Cowell ran toward them and bumped one of them, Bosenko said. When Cowell didn’t respond to the officers’ commands, they used a baton, stun gun and pepper spray to subdue him."

Are you sure that's what it sounds like?

It's kind of impossible to tell from the article whether the cops overreacted. Also, why would the mom assume that everyone knows the symptoms of austism? I would have no idea if that kid was autistic, especially not just based on his not speaking.

To answer your question, in my opinion, Yes.

"When Cowell didn’t respond to the officers’ commands, they used a baton, stun gun and pepper spray to subdue him." I wouldn't know how to arrest anyone who didn't respond to verbal commands without physical force, so it made sense to me.

Yes.

The article won't open for me anymore for some reason, but it stated that he didn't respond to verbal commands.

I wouldn't know how to arrest anyone who didn't respond to verbal commands without physical force.

I think there is a difference between not doing anything, and physically resisting. For all I know, he was resisting, but I don't think there is anything in the article to suggest that he did anything derserving a broken arm and a head injury. And a macing. And a tasering.

The only thing the article suggests is that the police officers involved were "assholes" and kicked the crap out of a poor autistic kid.

I dunno. I have mixed feelings on this one.

If I saw a teen charge at me and not respond and DIDNT KNOW he had some sort of handicap.... being 2 am... I think I would of responded the same way.

You got to think. The cops had no idea.

But then again... I think it was a little much.
