Story link from CNN.com

A student on Monday killed two of his grandparents, then went on a shooting rampage at his Minnesota high school, killing seven people and wounding as many as 13 others before killing himself, officials said.
...
"At this time, we believe he was acting alone," he said, refusing to comment on a possible motive, adding, "It's far too early in the investigation."

The slain students were shot in one room, he said.

"Apparently, he walked down the hallway shooting and then he entered a classroom, he shot several students and a teacher, then himself," said Roman Stately, with the Red Lake Fire Department, who arrived at the high school moments after the shootings.

Ok...it's sad and a real tragedy that this happened. But here's how the rest of the thread is going to go.

GUNS ARE BAD!!!!!1111ONNE

NO!!! GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE; PEOPLE DO!!!!111one

YARGH...LET'S RESOLVE NOTHING AND GET PISSED AT EACH OTHER ON THE INTERWEB!

I'm not trying to be a dick. I wish to god this didn't happen. This kid probably needed some help and the grandparents should have had their firearms more securely kept. Mentally unbalanced + easy access to guns = not good.

When are people going to learn, don't tease the loner... but before this thread turns into an anti-gun thing, I'm interested in hearing if people can think of a realistic way that schools and communities can spot kids who are not socially connected and are targets for teasing and bullying, and try to make do more to insure that they don't feel pushed to the point where they act out in a homicidal way?

And to the above post, I think that girls tend to kill themselves instead of others when they become disconnected targeted by bullies....

America was never violent before?

Before I get jumped, lemme just say that what I meant by that is that, the world has been a violent place for a long time.

But you know what? That's neither here nor there, people died, it's a fucking shame.

A kid being socially disconnected and aloof is no indication that they're potential murders. Lots of kids are ostracized and bullied but very, very few of them would ever seriously entertain the idea of taking out their frustrations on people with a gun.

I shudder to think what might have happened to me had there been some witch hunt for weird kids when I was in high school.

We know nothing about this kid at this point.

Yes, it's a logical assumption to think he was an ostracized "loser", but how do you know he wasn't just a fucking psychopath? He shot and killed his grandparents, for Christ's sake!

That kid needed help. It is a shame no one cared enough to give it to him.

Also a shame there will be most likely MORE stupid backlash on all kids, which will only make the ones on the edge harder to identify.

At my son's school they have adopted a "Thought Crime" policy. Children face suspension for speaking, writing or depicting in any form a weapon for any reason. This includes writing anything historical. The school has decided by not speaking of tools of violence they will avoid this sort of occurrence. I think the school is NUTS and plan to attend the next school district meeting to let them know how ludicrous this notion is. It is really bad, my son is learning about Roman history. He drew a Roman with a sword and a shield and he got a "referral", if he draws a picture of any weapon again he will be suspended.

WTF????

The kid snapped...if it wasn't a gun, it would have been something else. Do a google search on the number of grandchildren who have whacked their grandparents, or killed some peers. This made the news because it was fast and sudden and deadly, but it would have played the same if he used a V-8 rather than a .38.

ARRR!!!

Is that true? I've only ever heard of boys shooting up schools, but the way the media works I don't count that as definitive evidence.

It's sad but i am not shocked.

Actually i am. I am shocked this dosen't happen more often. After columbine they didn't crack down on bullies they further ostrasized the geeks by making them go to therapy and so on to be more "normal" and to take it.

I'm sure we can all agree that preserving the status quo is very important.

It's aweful that the kid snapped and couldn't cope with the stress but he shouldn't be villified. We should try to learn why the fuck this happened so we can change the system and prevent it from happening in the future.
