I'd say 25% of the 18 year olds in the military are there because they were poor, and didn't have any other options.

so most of our troops have trust funds,
army recruiters are saints,
Iraq had WMD,
and Americans would be awfully polite to an occupying army.

you'd make a hell of a white house correspondent, by the way.

Not to nitpick, but insurgents, by definition, cannot be an "occupying army."

You might find this hard to believe, but some people join the military because they're into it, they're patriotic, they want to do the sorts of things that only the military provides, like handling powerful weapons or flying high performance aircraft, and serving their country.

I'm sure plenty of young people join the military to get out of BFE or to learn skills. But for the most part, they're not the ones doing most of the dying in combat. Instead, it's the guys who join combat arms looking for excitement, adventure, and are enthusiastic about jobs like being an infantryman, a Navy SEAL or forward observer. These jobs have no counterpart in the civilian life. Being able to operate a howitzer probably wont translate into a job in the private sector. They're there because they want to be.

The implication is that no one in their right mind would be in the Armed Forces unless they were given a bait-and-switch by recruiters, and that is just not true.

Actually I think you just choose to read it that way. As I choose to focus on the word I have bolded in your quote. As long as that word is some and not all (or maybe, maybe I would concede if it were most, but I doubt it) then the point is neither stupid or fallacious.

Though it does make you wonder, why does the military give people the bait and switch?

You Sir need to appologize to ever member of the Armed services you come across for awhile.

Or why don't you just finish the thought and go piss on a couple of Veteran's graves.

Since you live near Ft. Drum maybe you should go print that out and hand it out to the men and women as they come and go.

Or would that take a little more guts then just throwing some stupid thing you found up on the internet?

What bait and switch are you talking about?

That someone signed up to join the military and got sent overseas into a combat zone?

Last time I checked, it wasn't a secret that being in the military was a good way to get sent to a combat zone. I know my recruiter mentioned it.

Or maybe I'm just a "Poor Kid fighting".... or have been on the burial detail of more than a few of them.

I was trying to be polite instead of telling him that I hope he gets beaten or tear gassed by a riot cop the next time he attends a rally.

Couple of guys from my unit have already died. Have several friends that have come back due to wounds. Have many more brothers that are still over there. So maybe you're the ignorant one here.

Do you have any data to support this? I'm sure that most people take their financial situation into consideration when selecting a career; that doesn't mean that they're poor.

Of course I cited it in my post... "I'd say"

Based on my HS experiances (I was an ROTC nerd) I knew almost all the kids that signed up right out of school.
