Google gives to the good guys

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Employees of U.S.-based search engine Google gave $207,650 to federal candidates for the 2004 elections -- virtually all of it to Democrats.

A USA Today analysis published Monday indicated 98 percent of the money went to Democrats, the most-lopsided giving of any of the top tech company donors.

Microsoft was the biggest tech donor, with its political action committee contributing $3.1 million last year, 60 percent to Democrats.

Overall, 53 percent of high-tech industry contributions went to Democrats, said the liberal Center for Responsive Politics, a group that tracks campaign spending and contributions.

Republicans must work hard to win support from a company whose employees seem philosophically wed to Democrats, CRP's Larry Noble said.

Google declined to discuss employee campaign contributions but the among the company's top 2004 givers was Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt, whose biggest single donation was $25,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

You might want to check out the multitude of threads about Darfur. I've started several and there are several more.

news.google.com

That's a news aggregator, not a news source. Google does not write or publish news. It collects news written and published in other sources and makes it all available in one place.

Can we just vote Google for president? I'm sure they could come up with an engine to cross reference all the stupid things that any leader has ever done, and then do not that.

I'm afraid if we did that we'd be forced to conclude that stupid and bad ideas are somehow necessary.

Anyone notice how shit Google has become since it enlarged its database to 8 million pages? It seems to me they just added 4 million dead links - all this does is spam up a search.

They've just mullered the newsgroup service they bought from Deja, by (ludicrously) refusing to display email addresses.

Their advanced search pails in comparison to alltheweb and now I discover they are fucking communists!

I'll hand it to Alltheweb for being the only major search engine to index Amharic and other languages in the Ethiopic script. Google doesn't touch it. OH THE HUMANITY.

So that's one thing where Google is messing up.

And that's a pretty obscure thing to complain about, unless one is Ethiopian or Eritrean. Point being, overall Google search is still really good, and you have to search hard to find problems.

Do you have any specific examples of problems with Google search, or is your complaint purely political? My comment before was purely political -- I'm asking about the search aspect because I'm curious, politics aside.

Discussed where? On sg? It is, and has been. On the news? It is, and has been. On Google? Google has over 10000 links for "sudan".

You're just not looking hard enough.

I have a complaint, not about Google but about "search engines"/"directories" that get returned as the first hit when you're searching for something. Google seem pretty good at cleaning those up, especially if you let Google know.
