Imagine you're a police officer responding to a call about an intruder in a home. When you get to the house, you find the terrified would-be burglar backed into a corner -- not by the family Doberman, but by a large black ball that quickly matches the burglar's every move and keeps taking his picture.

The device, developed at the University of Uppsala, acts as a high-tech security guard capable of detecting an intruder thanks to either radar or infra-red sensors. Once alerted, it can summon help, sound an alarm or pursue the intruders, taking pictures.

It is capable of travelling at 20mph, somewhat faster than a human being. Even worse for intruders, the robot ball can still give chase over mud, snow and water.

Other devices, including microphones, cameras, heat sensors and smoke detectors are mounted on its central axis.

The device was originally designed for use on Mars, but now will be marketed by Rotundus AB as a potential home protection device.

Pick it up and throw it. Smash it. Hit it with a bat. Shoot it.

This will not stop a dedicated criminal. Nor will it protect more than one floor of a house.

But go technology.

Clearly you're not aware of the dangers robots pose. Robots are everywhere, and they eat old people's medicine for fuel.

Hmm. It'd be a neat trick if they could get it to follow someone while evading attempts by said person to attack the ball. Pretty spiffy stuff, either way.

Can we say wireless web connection and off site picture storage?

Yes officer, here's his picture breaking into the house, here's his picture destroying my property, and here's his picture stealing my property.

Or, for the less police inclined. Here's a picture, bring me this person's head.

It's cool until that robot's programming snaps, it goes into Kill All Humans mode, and you're the one cowering in your own corner, as it slowly advances towards you, the rotary saw attachment you didn't know it had out, and pointing at you.
