I wasn't really sure if this was a lifestyle issue or a current affair. You'll have to forgive me, because I've now decided it's both and posted accordingly.

From the petition: Magic Mushrooms and other psilocybe mushrooms, including all psilocin-containing fungi, have long been proven to be a safe and non-toxic recreational drug. For the past thirty years, fresh, unprepared psilocybe mushrooms have been legal to possess in the UK. Recently, the Home Office advised the public that the sale and possession of psilocybe mushrooms was not an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Consequently, the sale of fresh psilocybe mushrooms has grown considerably since this statement. Recently, the UK government has moved to outlaw completely the possession or sale of psilocybe mushrooms. The Drugs Bill currently before the house contains the clause;

"Inclusion of mushrooms containing Psilocin etc. as Class A drugs
In Part 1 of Schedule 2 to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (c. 38) (Class A drugs),
in paragraph 1, insert at the appropriate place—
“Fungus (of any kind) which contains Psilocin or an ester of Psilocin.”"

This clause would render any psilocin containing fungi illegal.

Even if you aren't the slightest bit interested in mushrooms, I really don't see how anyone could have a major objection to someone else doing them. I can't see how they're being targeted as some kind of evil substance - in my opinion 6 pints of Stella Artois would have a far greater negative impact on your health and personality than a few grams of mexicans. The fact that owning them for the purposes of getting of your tits in privacy could be worth a seven year stretch when drink drivers and thugs are directly hurting people and getting far less strikes me as a bit unfair. How about you?

I've taken this from http://www.thepsychedeli.co.uk

Jan 28th, 2005
"the government is currently attempting to ban the mushroom outright through a proposal on Page 21, Paragraph 21 of the new Drugs Bill. The aim is to get the mushroom listed as a Class A drug, an unprecedented move which implies a problem of such magnitude that only drastic action can prevent societal catastrophe. If the clause in question were to become law, possession of the mushroom could entail 7 years in prison."

Add your name to an online petition against this (essentially undemocratic) action!

the wierdest thing is how can they outlaw possession of something that grows wild naturally and is indeed native to this country

Selling them is one thing, but possessing them?

Sounds like its the same old story then - some one in the moral / moron minority has spotted a loop hole that might *gasp* allow someone to have a good time and is taking steps to stop them - that said, I've obviously been so conditioned myself that I'd just assumed that mushrooms were illegal to start with.

I'll accept that we don't want to have heroin being given out to small children, but it is time for some braver souls (in politics - and this is across all parties) than we have at the moment to put a stake in the ground about the whole issue - given that we know for a fact that those legal favourates Alcohol and Ciggarettes are pretty bad for us in excess (increasing medical costs) and can cause some pretty serious crime (drink driving, "loutish behaviour" etc) the arguments against some of the benigner illegals start to look pretty thin and its probably time for us all to decide what we can and can't live with and go from there, instead of the black and white "drugs are bad" message we've all been suffering under previously.

Im loving all the bill hicks-esq statements! I agree completely. I think its insane that tobaco and alcohol are legal yet other drugs are not. It doesnt realy add up. Timothy Leary came up with the theory that its simply a case of looking at drugs from a different perspective. He believed that acid should be legalized but also believed it would never happen because we look at it like:
Drugs = Evil
He believed that it should be legalized but controled in a similar way to cars. Sounds odd i know but let me explain. You would have to be over a certain age and learn alot about the drug to be able to get a licence to use it. This way if you were not of a stable mindset or it was deemed that you would react badly then you would not be able to get a licence. Simple as that. Its all just about openeing up and approaching such thngs from a different angle.

Outlawing mushrooms in UK is like outlawing chewing coca leaves in Bolivia – Damn Stupid. I hope neo-con madness doesn't continue to flood across the atlantic, or else I might go and live in Bolivia!

I wonder whose dumbass idea this was? This is quite a step backward and coming at a time when the government has been experimenting with a softer approach to cannabis it surprises me.

I agree with pretty much what everyone has said, but online petitions make me want to jab people in the eyes with knitting needles. biggrin
