In court documents for the Australian recording industry's case against Kazaa over copyright infringement and questionable business practices, an interesting piece of information surfaced:

Kazaa's own employees hate the program. Well, the free version of it, anyway.

Employees of the company that owns Kazaa Media Desktop hate using the program because the accompanying software can slow their computers, the documents say.

Like many free programs, Kazaa comes packaged with adware for delivering advertisements to users. Many adware programs have been blamed for slowing down systems and causing some to crash.

Phil Morle, director of technology for Kazaa owner Sharman Networks, wrote that Kazaa needs to be careful with how much adware it bundles.

Of course, users can always pay $29.95 for the "adware-free" version. This doesn't stop Kazaa from bundling other things with the program, though...

In another internal document, Priit Kasesalu, one of Kazaa's developers, warns that users might consider Kazaa to be spyware and flee if a partner, Altnet, kept logs of legal downloads it delivers via Kazaa.

Still said Sharman does not log downloads, and though Altnet may collect some statistics, "that is a very different issue."

Things like this are why Spybot Search and Destroy is one of my favorite programs.

It opens when YOU want it to, pushing the X closes the program completely, the downloads aren't constantly being virus-searched, ect.

I love WinMx. It hardly slows my crappy dial-up, especially if I am just downloading one file. Kazaa used up the whole connection. I'm not shitting you guys when I say that it would take a page FIVE minutes to load fully.

i scanned a few times with search and destroy but there's some kind of DSO exploit that refuses to let itself be removed.
everytime i scan and choose to "solve problem" and scan again it's still there.

does anyone have any idea's , search and destroy says it allows websites to run code on my computer.

...imagine that- the emploees at kazzaa are thinking, sentient beings just like the rest of us.

Kazaa blows - free music is great but i'd much rather buy new cds than ruin my comp. system.

Why does Kazaa even exist anymore? Bad program. So many better alternatives.
Even if you can get a "clean" version of Kazaa, good luck actually downloading the file you want. Ad companies spam Kazaa with fake videos that open web sites; piracy haters and bands spam fake songs and trial version of songs. Waste of time.

Don't mess with AdAware or Spybot, get the new Microsoft (GIANT) anti-spyware....it's 100X better, as I can attest to after having absolutely no spyware on my machine now.

That's funny because I hate the program too. I use Limewire and I generally like it besides the fact that it slows down my other Internet related programs. But yeah, Kazaa was awful and I'm glad it's dead.

I've pretty much given up on those sorts of programs and given myself fully to torrents. I use BitComet a lot. The torrent scene took a bit of a hit after Suprnova went down, but there's still some sites out there. I like torrentreactor now, looks very similar to suprnova.

hey, me too. anybody... what the hell is that? and how can i get rid of it?

and why do neither ad aware or spybot search and destroy detect the wildtangent thing that spyhunter finds but that i have to pay for the full version of spyhunter to get rid of?

these are not rhetorical questions. i do not want spyware on my computer.

Boot in Safe Mode and run Spybot to kill the DSO exploit.

The reason they don't detect WildTangent is because WildTangent is neither spyware or adware. It's usually installed with a free game you downloaded from somewhere, and it does collect anonymous usage statistics, but they have a privacy policy concerning personal info:

Some of our games do collect anonymous usage information. We do this to determine what sorts of games people like, and how long they like to play them. This helps us create and give you better games for you to enjoy. The data that is collected includes how many times the game was played, and the average time for which it was played. This information does not contain any personal information and cannot be linked to any specific user.

Like all companies that sell products over the Internet, we do collect personal information from customers on a voluntary basis when they buy one of our products (such as name, contact information and payment and billing information). We store this information in a secure format, and also use Secure Sockets Layer encrypted connections to transmit your payment-related personally identifiable information to further protect its privacy. We never sell personally identifiable information to anyone.

When a company changes its policies and is no longer performing spyware-like activities, Adaware and Spybot generally remove it from the detection list.
