BUSH: HOLDING THREE JOBS 'UNIQUELY AMERICAN'
Tues Feb 8 2005 9:27:01 ET

Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'

While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.

The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'

But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.

Begin transcript:

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

Yeah, it's fanfuckingtastic that a woman working three jobs just to make ends meet is "uniquely American." We should all be proud.

The president should stick to his fucking scripts.

Lovely. It makes me sick to think about how hard my boyfriend has to work (and how many jobs he has to work) to make ends meet. And what makes me even sicker is that we are the lucky ones.

Oh and that bit joking about whether she gets any sleep? Classy. Real presidential behavior there. I think it would've been awesome if she had simply responded, "No, Mr. President. I don't."

I guess in some perverse way she should be happy she even has one job, let alone three. There are some people who only dream of being in such a position.

riiiiiiiiiiiiiight...because an education automatically means high paying jobs.

With logic like that, I really hope you never become a doctor.

You: Get rid of the cancer.

lack of planning on her part doesn't constitute an emergency on anyone else. And yes, President Bush's statement is unprofessional and lame.

my favorite thing, and i don't know if it applies elsewhere, is the occupational privledge tax. it used to be 10 dollars a year or so, but recently was a vote to up it to 150 or so. pay that 3 times in one year and tell me how cool it is to work 3 service industry jobs. robot

I never said an education will automatically give you a higher paying job. I said "get an education and one job that you can survive on"

I know plenty of people with educations who can't find jobs. There is not always a direct correlation unfortunately.

And I love when they let Bush form his own sentences. You get an even better idea of what he really thinks. whatever

Straight from the conservative "easier said than done" box.

Do you even know how many people *have* an education and don't have "one job they can survive on"? Ask your local waiter with a masters in computer science. This is the richest country in the history of the world, I don't think anyone should have to be working three jobs just to barely survive here, education or not.

Wow... what a glaringly stupid comment.

Now... I'm curious.
How do you propose she pays for this education? School isn't cheap. She's already working three jobs just to get by. Where do you think that extra money is coming from? And how about the time? Three jobs probably keeps her busy as it is. Getting a higher education isn't just a walk in the park.

More from the AP

Doesn't sound as 'unscripted' as Drudge makes it out to be, since she was invited to tell her story. Unfortunately, it doesn't go into more detail about which jobs she holds, part-time or full-time, her income, single or married, etc.. From the article, her stance seems to be "I contribute, and I want to know that I will be getting SS when I retire".

ARRR!!!
