Ian Wilmut, the scientist who created Dolly the cloned sheep has been granted a license to study human cloning by the British Government.

The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority, which regulates such research, approved the license for Ian Wilmut, who led the team that created Dolly at Scotland's Roslin Institute in 1996.

He applied in September to Britain's fertility authority for a human cloning license to study how nerve cells go awry to cause motor neuron disease.

In a move that's sure to raise hackles with the anti-stem-cell crowd, the scientists will be using cloned embryos and studying the stem cells derived from the embryos in order to better understand and perhaps someday cure a currently incurable muscle-wasting motor neuron disease.

Wilmut and motor neuron expert Christopher Shaw of the Institute of Psychiatry in London plan to clone cells from patients with the incurable muscle-wasting disease, derive blank-slate stem cells from the cloned embryo, make them develop into nerve cells and compare their development with nerve cells derived from healthy embryos.

The mechanism behind motor neuron disease is poorly understood because the nerves are inaccessible in the brain and central nervous system and cannot be removed from patients.

Bokanovskification consists of a series of arrests of development. We check the normal growth and, paradoxically enough, the egg responds by budding.

So, if you cloned a President who had already served two terms, would the clone be prevented from running for the same office, or could you have FDR v1.2 go up against JFK v1.2 in the Democratic primaries?

ARRR!!!

Well its not cloning in the same sense as Dolly, as there's no fully grown individual. In fact it's the same as normal stem cell research, except the stem cells are now being derived specifically from an embryo with the same genes as a living individual.

This still leaves a fully cloned human a long way away, unless you believe those sect people.

there's no way cloning can be as fun a way to reproduce as normal sex... unless you're a nerdy scientist who can't get normal sex and really likes test tubes

Not to mention all clones right now degrade from the procedure. Shorter life span etc.

Good. I hope more scientists move to the UK, then.
Bush is only hurting America by not allowing it. But then, what's new?
