Is there anyone out there that isn't working on a successor to the current DVD standard? With Blu-Ray and HD-DVD not even on the shelves yet, yet another format has been announced with really, really, really big storage potential.

The new format called HVD standing for Holographic Versatile Disc will be capable of holding up 200 movies on a single disc.

Six companies, including Fuji Photo and CMC Magnetics, have formed a consortium to promote HVD technology.

The disc has been roadmapped up to 1 Terabyte, however it is thought that the consortium will start working on discs with a much lower capacity. A 200Gb for recording and a 100Gb read-only disc.

I don't know about you, but I'm really starting to wonder what it is exactly that these guys expect me to be burning. 1000Gb removable media? Somebody has way too much porn.

Some day someone will invent holo-porn, fully interactive, 3D models of porn stars.

Then the computers will quietly take over as we play with our new holographic sex partners.

Actually, that might not be so bad.

Daily backups of four or five 200 gig hard drives would be one use. Lack of media even approaching the size of my hard drives has caused me not to bother with backups. To unfortunate results, as between one thing and another, I've lost about six years worth of files in the last few months.

I remember reading something a while ago about how holograms would be best for storage, and could have been done a while ago, but no one did it. Neat. Now I can get the entire lord of the rings triology, plus extras on only like, three discs.

So you people are saying you haven't passed the terrabyte porn mark yet? Slackers.

This is going to be huge for places that deal with large datastores. I know of one place that averages two terrabytes of data a week. already.

I remember having a computer that couldn't load Command and Conquer and Red Alert at the same time, but it was still pimp. My god, I'm old, that must have been, like, what, 94? I remember it was right after Columbus came back with news of this whole 'America' thing.

Hell, I remember back when King's Quest 4 was an epic sized game, at the whopping total of 10 Megs. I mean, it took like FIVE floppies to install!
