GENERAL BUTTNAKED... When I first heard this I didn't believe it. Insanity.

You expect your soldiers and generals to be psychopaths?

This explains a lot

No. Psychopaths don't enjoy anything, they are incapable of emotions or empathy.

they are incapable of empathy, it doesn't mean they are incapable of other emotions (such as anger, fear or amusement)
Not all psychopaths share the same characteristics, but the consensus is that they must have a minimum number of a defined list of characteristics

You're not supposed to enjoy killing, and you're not supposed to kill unless it is absolutely necessary.

Step into reality, buddy. Really. Come on out. These are soldiers. They are in combat. This is what they do. For crying out loud, it sounds like you want an army of angstful goths hesitating at every turn. Think about the context, and realize what you're saying is nonsense.

How much firsthand combat do you think the general is getting these days? I'd say he's probably much more familiar with the intricate workings of pencils, paper and computers than with his gun. Top level military are administrators. I might forgive a grunt who had been at the front lines personally dealing with this stuff every day for the last two years for saying something like this, but someone who probably spends most of the day in his office? That's crap.

I suppose so. Somebody has to kill in war, right? Why not hand the job to someone who is into it, instead of someone who is likely to kill themselves or abuse their wife because they can't handle what they've done?

A friend's ex just had to go into hiding from her recent boyfriend, because he craked her skull open and and almost broke her back. This stand-up fellow just got back from service in Iraq, where he bragged about cutting off people's fingers and putting them on a necklace (with pictures to prove it, apparently). He loved his work, and apparently he loves to beat up women, too.

I would assume that if you looked at statistics, people recently returning combat would probably have a much higher rates of such happenings. It's not a condemnation of our soldiers, it's a sad consquence to the psyche after months or years of seeing fucked up stuff on a dialy basis.

I'll admit it - I'm curious to know what the un-edited version of that comment was.

What was the start of this tread? Oh yea the gung ho marine general. In my mind that post he made draws a line altogether to close between a gun ho solder and an obviously twisted person that would of no doubt been a scumbag without any help from the military.

While I do think there is much greater incident of physiological trouble, same as with cops, firemen, ect, equating solders with abusers is wrong. I know thing happen and solders break the law, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the rate of crime was lower or equal to the average for the demographic. Considering these are young men in the job that they’re in and the pressures they face, that’s fucking amazing. That post, set in the context of this thread, was something I found offensive. If it had been separate thread about troubled troops, different story.

That's not even relevant to what I said.

But according to CNN Mattis "commanded Marine expeditions in Afghanistan and Iraq," so I wouldn't start calling him a pencil pusher just yet.

I bolded the part where you forgot to put the facts. Don't make statements like that unless you have some proof, please.

If I say it's safe to surf this beach, it's safe to surf this beach!

Seriously, this is'nt too surprising to me. Some people just don't think before they act. I always think it's good to enjoy your job, but that's rediculous.
