Hmm I dunno, I still think it would be a good idea to look into precautions (I.E. ways to blow the fucker up) just in case their calculations end up being wrong and we're faced with it raining down on us after all whatever

You shouldn't blow it up unless you can figure out a way to turn the debris into nothing larger than a pebble - otherwise you get a shower of large rocks. Diverting asteriods via solar sails (most likely) or propulsion (ion/nuclear/magnetohydrodynamic/...?) is at least theoretically possible.

It would be easier with a comet because there is a good fuel source (water) already available. A rocky asteroid is more of a challenge.
