you know what's great?

those little plastic "tables" that they put in the middle of your pizza so the box doesn't get stuck to the cheese. those are really swell, kudos to whoever invented them. smile

You convict based on evidence available at the time, based on the standard of whether a reasonable person would have reason to doubt that the defendant is guilty of the crime based on that evidence. Most of the cases in which someone on death row was released were cases in which new evidence arose, in which there was bad representation that didn't challenge evidence properly, or other circumstances that arose after the trial.

If the court system was set to not convict based on the possibility that maybe someday you'll find something that shows the defendant is not guilty, then you'd never get a conviction. Instead, we have to decide based on what we have at the time. And there are cases where a jury probably very rightly convicted based on what they had, but something else came up later. That, to me, is a compelling reason not to execute a prisoner.

I cannot fucking believe it! A valid, lucid comment, based on our current LAWS. Wow! Just fucking Wow!

I oppose the death penalty for many reasons, one of which is practical. Once a criminal knows that they will die if caught, what is to stop them going on a killing rampage?

Won't they kill without mercy at this point?

How will police negotiate with a criminal who knows that the death penalty waits for them?

I am pro-multiple death penalty in cases of multiple murders, (torture them a little before killing them, a set amount for each death but the last, kill them for the last.)

I am also for public executions.

You don't negotiate. Police never really do anyways. Its merely stalling tactics. Israel doesn't negotiate. If they have to kill their own people so be it. They killed their own Olympic team when it was taken hostage. And to earlier posts, I am in no way admiring China in the sense of its squashing political dissenters. I admire China for its hardline on crime. Those crimes being the same ones we consider crime. As someone said, sending a person to prison for life, oooh wow how scary, they have everything they need there. And the whole argument about execution not deterring crime is false. There is no clear proof that it doesn't and there is no clear proof that it does. It just varies on region. But lets break it down to economics. Its far cheaper to just execute someone then to imprison them for life. And the reason why its not cheaper in the U.S. is because of the ridiculous appeals process we have estbablished.

surreal These credit card bills are wearing me out. Fortunately in your world I always have the alternative of a conviction for murder.
