US aid for college students slashed
Change in rules to affect almost 1.3m
By Marcella Bombardieri, Globe Staff | November 23, 2004

Nearly a quarter of low- and moderate-income college students who currently qualify for federal Pell grants will see their awards reduced or eliminated under a change in federal rules that Congress allowed in its new spending bill passed over the weekend, according to an estimate from higher education analysts.

It's a great time to be a student. Now I realize that I'm extremely lucky to even be in a position to complain, but this type of thing has severely affected the quality of my education. I get very little financial aid, so I have to work about 30 hours a week on top of school work. That makes it very hard to get good grades and not want to kill myself. Also, funding cuts have made my program (creative writing) a mere shell of its former self. It frustrates me that if I had gone to college 5 years ago the whole thing would have been easier and more enjoyable. Thanks government, you're really looking out for the little guy.

Seriously, leave behind all of the kids of poor and working class parents who rely on those scholarships. LEAVE THEM ALL BEHIND, assholes.

Education fees continue to rise, but these brilliant fucktards in office see it necessary to decrease aid for people who can barely afford it.

Way to improve the American economy. Fewer educated workers is -really- going to make things better.
(I am being sarcastic, OK.)

Not as much aid for college = not as much kids going to college = more recruits for the military?

Don't listen to me, I'm just thinking out loud.

It could also be a sneaky way to let Americans compete with migrant workers for low wage jobs.
This is very shortsighted. They've got the funding to spend on a presidential yacht and other frivolous things but won't invest in the future. We've got the same problem with priorities where I live in regards to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

edited cause Wren posted too soon.

Just a hint: in Finland the universities are still almost
free for everyone, including foreign students. The fee (typically less than 100€) includes full health (also dental) care and some other benefits. There are lot of fully English programs, too... shocked

during the debates, bush used the number of pell grants as a metric to prove how successful he's been at managing the economy. yet another fraudulent claim from the bullshitter in chief.

so in addition to a 75 percent increase in fees and tuition last year and this year, now i get to deal with this.

i really feel like the powers that be just don't give a shit about people like me, and it makes me sad to think that they might have once.

C'mon people! Making education so expensive that only wealthy peopl e can afford it is obviously the meritocratic way! whatever

The neocons claim they favour a system in which the individual gets by on his personal attributes but reinforce an education system completely at odds with that principle. Quite shocking.

Yeah, Bush is always emphasising education as the panacea for all our economic woes. That and tax cuts.

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers.
One hundred million angels singin'.
Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum.
Voices callin', voices cryin'.
Some are born an' some are dyin'.
It's Alpha's and Omega's Kingdom come.

catching a theme here?
when civilization starts working backwards, things will begin to slide and crumble.

It is not clear yet which students will lose their Pell grants, but Fitzgerald said it most likely will be those with family incomes at the higher levels of Pell eligibility, perhaps $35,000 to $40,000, Fitzgerald said. These students already receive far less than the maximum grant. Many other students with lower family incomes will see their grants reduced by up to a few hundred dollars, Fitzgerald estimated.

Families will learn whether they are losing grant money when they receive information about their aid packages for next year.

That's a relief for those of us who file independently, but I feel for those who are still filing under their parent's/parents' income bracket. Ugh. puke

Mr. President?

No. Mr. Reality.

If you can't see the irony of needing a college degree to work as a retail store manager then your education was a waste. Sorry to say it but you now need a degree to do obtain these positions. I hope most of you make better use of your college education. Become something. Don't waste your folks money and my tax dollars on bullshit degrees.
