Stephen Roach, the chief economist at investment banking giant Morgan Stanley, has a public reputation for being bearish.

But you should hear what he's saying in private.

Roach met select groups of fund managers downtown last week, including a group at Fidelity.

His prediction: America has no better than a 10 percent chance of avoiding economic ``armageddon.''

I'm no economist but even I know you can't spend money like a drunken sailor for four years strait and expect everything to be peachy keen.

The problem is our leaders are either expecting the magic of the mystical Free Market to ballence itself out or they're filthy criminals, looting our government in an attempt to rob the country blind. It's a toss up as to wether fenatical capitalism or sheer balls out theivery is worse. Though, there are some who say the two things are pretty much the same.

No, it's the fault of everyone who trusts proven imbecils to run your lives for you.

I can imagine when the crash happens, millions of republican americans crying into their gruel in the morning claiming that they are victims somehow and that it's not their fault.

Simple lesson, budgets have to balance. if they don't then you're storing up debts for the future or you're acumulating wealth that you have no use for. It's that simple. Because of the deficits you're running now, you're going to have to spend less in the future (or discover the secret of alchamy)

The growth in personal debt is a problem with the 'american way of life' that you are so intent on exporting around the world.

I agree with you very much, and am very familiar with the mindless consumerisms and damaging lifestyles, but why don't you say that first sentence to the ghosts of all of the people that were assasinated that stood up to the banking system, to government corruption, to war crimes, etc.
I personally am an actvist, I go out there an act, I stay informed, and I change my lifetsyle around when I believe it is damaging and against my morals (including eating meat). You are trying to put the blame wholly on the people (which is an important point, people need to change their piggy mindless lifestyles), and for that you are wrong. There are so many problems with the banking system and with other organizations that almost no amount of american lifestyle changes would balance it out. There is government and corporate responsiblity, not just citizen responsiblity. When the government and corporations are using everything in their power to control the American minds and to stuff things down their throat, and enforcing systems on them, dumping chemicals on them and in their food, sucking up their children into fast food fantasies, and controlling the airwaves(especially in instances where people are murdered who stand out against this), then a whole LOT of blame can be put on them.

Both corporate/government responsiblity and citizen responsiblity need to be met, though obviously, the citizens are going to be the ones to force the government/corporate responsiblity on them or die trying.

Is anyone worried about the weak dollar? Or are just happy at all the Europeans buying stuff over there?

Is it true that all the bonkers entry requirements meant there weren't as many tourists, and that's one reason why the dollar is being kept weak?

Also, Russia is likely to start doing its oil trade in Euros, now, instead of dollars. Anyone else noticing the demonization of Russia again? whatever

I fully agree. There's a lot of stuff wrong with everywhere. whatever I'm just saying..

Edited to clarify: You, being in the UK may not be so aware of what it's like here.. The climate towards Russia has pretty noticeably changed, around the same time that the rumors of them doing trade in Euros came about.. And the happenings in Chechnya are not exactly recent developments..

Trade it in for gold first - or buy barrels of gas.

It's ironic that we're going to be crucified by our own so called 'free' markets, though that doesn't stop it from sucking.
