While Christensen doesn't oppose the campaign to enact state and federal bans on gay marriage, he worries it's distracting from immediate threats to marriage's place in society.
``If those initiatives are part of a broader effort to reaffirm lifetime fidelity in marriage, they're worthwhile,'' he said. ``If they're isolated -- if we don't address cohabitation and casual divorce and deliberate childlessness -- then I think they're futile and will be brushed aside.''
while i don't agree with him, it's nice to at least see someone who's beliefs are somewhat consistant with themselves.
personally, i can just deal better with someone who says "gay marriage is wrong because they can't breed! oh, but heterosexuals who can't or won't are different... doesn't apply to them" or "all abortion are mruder and therefor wrong" than "all abortion are murder, except one's i say are okay".
i prefer consistancy, whatever the opinion. the "oh, but that's different because it may apply to me or a buddy" thing bugs me much more.

But life is complicated, and what might be right in one situation might be terrible in another. Isn't consistancy another word for dogmatic? Is an unfeeling unthinking application of rules the best way?

I think the larger aim of all this is to discourage sex for pleasure entirely, using legal methods as much as possible.
It's not a war against abortion, or homosexuality, or to defend marriage. It's a war on sex.
i don't know how true that is. the family is still the the most basic unit of society. it's disintergration should be cause for concern. that's why i'm in favor of same sex marriage. eveybody should get a shot at making a family. we may dicover in a few decades, that families will be very different, but stable and cohesive. it's just a matter of time.
but, i don't think that all people who are against same sex marriage are for brief, painful, procreative friction. they just have a different vision of the role of sex in their lives, and we should'nt take that away from them, just like we don't want them to take our visions from us.
What's the #1 reason people get divorced? Money. Financial difficulty.
This is why evangelical Christians in the Bible Belt have far higher divorce rates than more secular Catholics in Massuhoweveryouspellit. The Bible Belt is poor.
Make it easier to afford to be a family. Make it so that both people don't HAVE to work in order to raise their kids, and still BARELY get by, and you'd see the divorce rate plummet. Simple as that.

Are you crazy?! Do you know how difficult military recruitment would be if people were not economically pressured? If people could afford luxury items like food and health care, we would need a draft!

Yeah, there's no way people would volunteer for reasons other than financial well-being.

C'mon now, Phoebus - his wording may have been a bit harsh, but the realities of recruiting (particularly for the Army) cannot be denied.

This is a good argument for same-gender and same-sex marriage... generally, these couples are more financially stable than their 'straight' counterparts.
I have a solution for both problems, instead of making abortion illegal, research an equally safe way to extract the already fertilized embryos and incubate them at a military base where their development can be monitored and enchanced from the womb to create an army of parentless supersoldiers.

No, I think it's more because in those parts, you're expected to marry the first girl who dates you. Listening to some laborers from the Valley I once worked with, they chided one of their friends for having a girlfriend he had no intention of marrying. "That's just stupid. Why are you wasting your time with her if you ain't gonna marry her?" These guys were barely out of high school.
My friend who is a devout Christian, makes a very good living making games for Playstation, he married the first girl who slept with him. Because that was "The right thing to do". Guess what happened inside 3 years? Divorceville.
