From Salon: Bush's Night of the Long Knives

On one of Powell's recent futile diplomatic trips, his informal conversation with reporters turned to a new book, "The Accidental American: Tony Blair and the Presidency" by James Naughtie, BBC Radio 4's "Today" show host. In the book, Powell is quoted as describing the neoconservatives to British Foreign Minister Jack Straw as "fucking crazies." That, the reporters suggested, might be an apt title for his next volume of memoirs. Powell laughed uncontrollably.

Now go on TV and say it, Mr. Powell, if you've got any testicles left.

I think that has more to do with Powell trying to be a good soldier more than a good politician. I have great respect for the man. I would choose him over anyother republican for president. I think he was between a rock and a hard place. He was pushed by Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney to present a hard case to go to war with Iraq. He more than anyone else knew the dangers of that road, (ie pottery barn rule) and having been the only one with a military background knew the price that would be paid. His biggest flaw lays there....he played a good soldier role in the end instead of going with what he though was right.
What would have happened if he went against the Bushies on Iraq? if he was the lone person on the administration against it?
The state dept would have been appropratied into the ground. It would have been great for Dems but probably bad for the country as a whole. It would have induced even more division in the country than it already has, if you can believe that.
Its easy to go on party lines though most Dems ridicule him for not standing up against bush.
But most Cons I know praise him for playing the good soldier.

any verification on this quote?

well with powell and his deputy gone. And some other moderate voices in the cabinet. bush has surrounded himself with yes men (and women) of the same idological (or should i say idiotlogical) mindset. Rice, his replacement, is known just follow the mindset of her boss....contrary to what her job as ADVISOR is about. Well she should definitly enjoy being the W's new poodle as sec of state.

it was embarrasing to see powell in that position....his ass must be so raw after 4 years of it. like goatse.

Powell's extraordinary outburst is alleged to have taken place during a telephone conversation with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw....the offices of Powell and Straw contacted Public Affairs, the US publishers of Naughtie's book, to say they would vigorously deny the claims if publication went ahead.

so acording to the guardian the only two witnesses to this outburst both deny it happened?

of course i would expect them both two out of simple professionalism but that leaves the story without any foundation. but another point in the story referring to who are neocons is refuted in the november edtion of esqire with wolfowitz explaining “Cheney can't be a neocon. He isn't Jewish.” so now whats left is a bad book desperate for media attention and a much better conspiracy theory to work with!

<sigh>

That's what you call "a bad joke". See, the line on the Right is that "neo-conservative" is liberal-speak for "Jew".

well?

I'm sure not all liberals are dumbass conspiracy theorists...Well I'd hope not anyway.

Besides - it's not just Liberals that his sarcasm was aimed at - their anti-semitic counterparts on the extreme right also allege that the country is run by a low key cabal of evil Jewish illuminati neocon lizards

Aw, man, evil Jewish illuminati neocons I could live with, but lizards? That's the last straw.
