Recount Ordered In Governor's Race

November 17, 2004

OLYMPIA - Republican Dino Rossi's tiny lead over Democrat Christine Gregoire in the closest governor's race in Washington state history triggered an automatic recount Wednesday.

Rossi held a 261-vote lead - out of 2.8 million ballots cast - after counties reported their final tallies to the state.

"Making history isn't easy," Rossi said, flashing a wide smile as he spoke to reporters outside his Bellevue campaign headquarters Wednesday night.

Gregoire agreed the night was historic - "Not the kind of history I had in mind on Nov. 2." She said she believes the recount will declare her the ultimate winner, calling Wednesday night's results a "virtual tie."

"Wins"? How do you win an election when they haven't finished counting the votes yet?

Someone who hasn't actually won anything as of this date because the 200 lead is neither official nor is it meaningful. You and everyone else will have to wait for the recount before you begin your victory chicken dance.

I'm confused. You do understand that the article you posted says the result is too close to be guaranteed reliable and therefore they're recounting the votes, right?

Now it looks like the vote to allow The Hammer to retain his leadership position even his indicted will break your way, but its curious that you're not bragging about it.

"Rossi held a 261-vote lead - out of 2.8 million ballots cast - after counties reported their final tallies to the state. Rossi had 1,371,414 votes, while Gregoire had 1,371,153."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It almost seems as if people are voting at random. Split 50/50 with millions of votes...

In any case, with this many votes there's a very good chance that if the election were to be repeated, the other guy would be barely ahead. Either way, it's nothing here to take pride in.

But I guess if you're a supporter of a party keen on regressive taxation and enshrining discrimination in state constitutions, there's nothing much else to be proud of.

For the record, Washington State Law requires a recount if the margin for the winner is less than 2000 votes. So its not like this is either parties doing.

And I would call it history, even if the recount doesnt favor Rossi. Washington hasnt elected a Republican governor in 24 years; since 1980. That a Republican candidate was so strong in the race speaks volumes about the climate in our state. And what is ever more interesting, is how heavily Washington went for Kerry. Alot of those people had to have voted for Rossi.

The Democratic Governors of late havent exaclty been anything memorable. So I really hope Rossi does well, if only for being the first Republican in a long time to give the Liberals around here a run for their money. Pun intended. whatever
