i havent seen this discussed yet

i think its a horrible choice
Rice does not have reall good foreign relations experience
and shes fucked up enough in the US
now shes gonna represent us across the world

the only reason Bush put her in there is cause Colin Powell was the lone top advisor who used his head and disagreed with Bush a lot
so he needed to replace him with another "Yes" man
so he just moved Condi over and promoted her assistant

so far Bush is doing nothing to earn the trust of the Democrats

I heard an interesting interview earlier today with a former colleague of Condi Rice who said that she was really hoping to move into Rummy's job, but was offered SOS as a sort of consolation. I'll try to find a link to post if the interview was indeed streamed or transcribed. You can bet that she is not going to be a shining example of American diplomatic prowess given her insistence on America operating in the world and spreading its agenda through brute force.

That and she did such a fantastic job of mediating the conflict between Powell and Rummy, which was part of her job, after all. This should be interesting.

Bush Rewards Rice For Loyalty To His Cause

on Nov 16, 2004 - 10:35 PM

'President George Bush yesterday named his foreign policy tutor and trusted confidante, Condoleezza Rice, as America's envoy to the world, signalling that his second administration would remain fixed on the global war on terror and regime change in the Middle East.

'With the promotion of Ms Rice, 50, from national security adviser to secretary of state, Mr Bush rids his administration of its last dissenting voice in Colin Powell, enabling it to project a united front on foreign policy. "During the last four years I've relied on her counsel, benefited from her great experience, and appreciated her sound and steady judgment," Mr Bush said.' (Guardian article).

I was visiting one of my accounts for work this afternoon, and we were talking about Powell leaving. The owner of this carpet store said "Yeah, did you hear who's replacing him? Condi Rice! Isn't that great? I like her... she's SHARP!" At first I assumed he was kidding. When I realized he was actually serious, my jaw dropped and I just stared at him for 30 seconds, fighting an urge, and remembering how mad my boss got the last time I called a customer a fuck-tard.

You know, for being our envoy to the world, I think it was a good choice to have Powell, who was a former soldier. He worked well with our obviously gung-ho country, and provided a lone voice of reason in what seemed a cabinet from the bowels of hell.

Now that there is no voice of reason, maybe it is a sure sign of this country's eventual downfall. I love America, and it hurts me to see our country become so ass-backwards.

i don't know a whole lot first hand about rice - but academia is a small world. i actually have a friend who attends the same ph.d program that rice did (the GSIS at the university of denver). apparently rice - who is (was?) a sovietologist - was also interested in cool stuff like conflict resolution and did some interesting work when she was an academic. - but i'm not 100% on that, i've never cared enough to check her cites or dissertation abstract.

which, by & by, might make her more qualified for the job than it seems at first blush - it's not important real world experience, but it is useful knowledge of a different kind.

tongue At least I could respect Powell. I mean they didn't listen to a damn thing that he said, and in the end he's playing the good soldier, but you know that screwed him over.

And being black has nothing to do with it.

Well, not only that, but she made her reputation as a Sovietologist, which isn't going to do any of us much good in the 21st century. Talk about a pre-9/11 mindset!

As noted above, the biggest reason she got the gig was so-called "loyalty" to Bush.

she has bunch of degrees
and experieince leading a university
and she has been National Security person for Bush 1 and 2
but thats all domestic and academic experience
- and frankly she didnt do that good a job of handling the US security and making sure or intelligence was aolid -
so why give her a more prestigious job?
one that she has very little credibilty in
seemingly giving the US even less credibility
