Of course they do. They already have streets named after Stalin and Lenin, so why not keep in the grand tradition? I'm surprised there's no rue Osama Ben Ladin. Maybe after he nukes Washington, they'll get around to it.
Nov. 13, 2004 15:12 | Updated Nov. 14, 2004 13:15 French consider naming streets after Arafat
Several French municipalities governed by communist and left-wing majorities are considering naming a street or a square after Yasser Arafat.
The French police intelligence service, Renseignements Generaux, reportedly warned the Ministry of Interior that such initiatives might trigger heated polemics and tensions between Jews and Muslims, especially neighborhoods ridden by ethnic violence.
why not we name streets and schools after jeff davis, robert e. lee, nathaniel bedford forrest, etc.; all responsible for more american deaths than arafat or bin ladin could ever dream of. sell it somewhere else stock.
come talk to us when any one of the following occurs:
1. professional sports teams stop slurring american indians;
2. southern states eliminate the confederate flag from their court houses;
3. highways aren't named after glorified biggots like robert moses; or
4. homophobic lawmakers concede that same sex couples should enjoy the same legal rights as every one else.

USA! USA! USA!
So the fact those things are wrong suddenly makes the current issue beneath consideration?
The French have been accused of being anti-semitic countless times before; the fact they're considering naming a street after Yassir Arafat is indeed worth bringing up.

There's also been a lot of anti-Arab sentiment there too. What's your point?

replace france with any southern state and replace arafat with any dead confederate leader and try that on for size. we've got more than enough examples of bigotry here in the US without having to go abroad to find examples to moan about. let's try and get our own house in order before we start to critize shall we? ya know, pot, kettle, black; those sort of things?
I think we could sum this up, Jeff_Fries, that its not of interest because it was posted by Stockula and has to do with France. Beyond that, I dont think the masses here at SG give a shit.

except that's not what's happening here. one would have to ignore every other one of stockula's anti-french postings to even possibly suggest that this is anything more than his usual blind american nationalism.

for example, alabama recently voted against removing segregation from their state constitution.
While I do think its [naming a street after Arafat] retarded, who gives a flying fuck, and what if the Whitehouse suddenly resided at 666 Pol Pot Drive? Would it matter, not really.
But also, while everyone has their opinions on other people, does anyone actually believe that anyone as rich as Arafat truly gives a shit about others as much as he'd've liked people to believe? fuck no.

Its sad but thats the way I see it.
It's not that we don't give a shit, it's that we see the blatant FUCKING hypocricy in Stockula's stance, and those like him.
The arrogant concept that he has some sort of moral high ground over the current country that Rush Limbaugh is trying to endorse.
It's funny he rants and raves about this shit all the time, it's like he's jacked into one of the right wing talk show hosts brain or something.
what is it about conservatives that only allows them to see in black and white? Arafat did some bad things. Israel, is also responsible for bad things. Arafat was responsible for corruption within palestine, and yet remained a symbol of hope and unification for his people. he embodied the palestinean cause. he won the nobel peace prize. people have had streets named after them for much much less.
i just think that there is alot more interesting and important things to talk about other than the naming of a street in france...no matter who it's being named after...

Word.
The Jews in Israel are doing to the Palestineans what the Nazis did to them.
