Just watched a TV-debate where it was noted how much the signs of Arafat's "mystic disease" reminded of the "mystic diseases" of other famous men... like Rock Hudson and Freddie Mercury.

Thoughts?

As French doctors continue to run tests on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat some medical authorities not connected directly to his case are suggesting that he may have HIV/AIDS.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath Monday said that all types of cancer had been ruled out.

Arafat has been visibly ill for more than two weeks. Last Wednesday he collapsed and briefly lost consciousness. Initial blood tests performed in the West Bank revealed a low blood platelet count. The Palestinian leader was airlifted to France where he is undergoing more tests.

But, with leukemia and other forms of cancer ruled out, the list of possible diseases is narrowing.

A low blood platelet count is a sign of a weakened immune system. In addition to cancer, the low count could be attributed to bleeding ulcers, colitis, liver disease, lupus, or HIV. It is believed that ulcers and colitis have already been ruled out.

Arafat has lost a considerable amount of body weight. Hopital d'Instruction des Armees de Percy, southwest of Paris, also has some of France's best HIV/AIDS doctors.

For several years there have been suggestions that Arafat was bisexual.

Ion Pacepa, who was deputy chief of Romanian foreign intelligence under the Ceaucescu regime and who defected to the West in 1978, says in his memoirs that the Romania government bugged Arafat and had recordings of the Arab leader in orgies with his body guards.

If the suggestions that Arafat has AIDS are true, it is doubtful it would be made public.

I'm watching the funeral now - I have to say the band is dreadful - they sound woefully out of tune and just played a screechy, "bosanova meets New Orleans jazz" version of the Death March about three times too fast.

Regardless of what you think of the man, wouldn't it have been better for the Egyptians to have provided professional musicians?

I was wondering this exact thing...

There is also speculation that it could be a condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC, in which the body consumes platelets, blood-clotting cells. In the elderly, it's linked to severe infection or cancer. Some are also suggesting it could be myelodysplasia.

However, we're unlikely to find out the truth anytime soon, if ever, considering France's laws governing the release of any patient information, which has probably kept the doctors there from discussing anything about Arafat's ailment without the consent of his wife.

I am familiar with Ion Pacepa from his book "Red Horizons" (which is about the Ceausescu's). He has taken severe criticism for some liberal stretching of the truth upon occaison. I would write off his claim about the orgies with bodyguards.

The HIV/AIDS is still a possibility, as is bisexuality. However, I wouldn't base my conclusion on Pacepa's claim without some other body of evidence.

Well, we know he spoke Arabic AND English, so the rumor about him being bisexual is actually true.

I bet on his way to France, he was thinking "Shit, I wish the hospitals in my country didn't suck so bad. Maybe I should have done something about that during the five thousand years I was in office. Meh, what're you gonna do?"

I also believe that according to French Law that a casuse of Death is not required on Death Ceritificates...that is rumored to be one of the reasons that he went to France...

Yeah, when you spend most of your time in the spotlight of the Arab world's war on Israel, supposedly brokering peace but actually doing the opposite (tangent: remind you of any leaders closer to home?), standing out in the Mideast sun, wind, sand, dust, breathing all of that Third World air, drinking that Third World water, dodging bullets, bombs, and bulldozers...

As Indian Jones said, "It's not the years, it's the mileage." I think Mileage got him in the end.

A low platelet count can be indicative of many different disorders. The presence of DIC in a patient could be determined by investigation of the components of the coagulation cascade.

If he had DIC, or myelodysplasia (or ANLL, if it had transformed), I don't see what would be gained by keeping that information private. Especially now that he's dead.

I have a theory other than AIDS to put forward. He was an old man and old men die all the time. Often from some biochemical pathway imbalance.

the report was from gay365.com - I really don't think they are villainizing anyone for having AIDS

Besides - Arafat was a villain whatever he died of.

Nothing is necessarily to be "gained" from keeping the cause of his death private. As I mentioned, French law is such that they can't talk about his condition without the consent of his wife.

I have a theory other than AIDS to put forward. He was an old man and old men die all the time. Often from some biochemical pathway imbalance.

Well, the speculation about AIDS, DIC, and myelodysplasia comes from comments regarding his having a degenerative blood disease of some sort. You may also be right, however, and like I said before, we may never know the truth.
