I am not into politics all that much, but this is the first year I've realized what is stated above is true.
This will be my first time voting. Bush has already had his chance to prove himself in his four years, I feel it's time to see what someone else can do.

For a president who claims to be a Christian and who's faith leads him in many of his decisions in office his record is quite un-Christian. Not only is he un-Christian, but whatever ethical stance he does have is incoherent.

Intro/Pre-emptive War

If there is a higher goal in traditional Christianity than to live life as Christ would (often expressed in the question, "What would Jesus do?"), I'd like to hear it. Aknowledging that Christians aim to live as Christ would live and did live, it seems surprising that the president who created and adopted a doctrine of "pre-emptive war" on nations perceived as being a threat to his nation claims to be a Christian. More surprising is that many Christians believe he is a Christian and support him as well as his war. I simply ask people to attempt to hold a mental image of Jesus Christ in military fatigues carrying a rifle and grenade; Jesus who asked us to love our enemy, who asked us to turn the other cheek, who asked us to forgive others supporting a "pre-emptive war."

Maybe, in his decision to go to war, Bush was not listening to what his religious beliefs told him to do, and instead was honestly trying to make whatever decision he deemed was the best strategy for protecting the lives of the citizens that he had been entrusted with when he was elected regardless of religious conviction.
If that is so, then why does he not take that strategy on other important and devisive issues in this country such as stem cell research, abortion, and "gay marriage"?

Stem Cell Research

Bush opposes federal funding for the research of stem cells which have been created for fertilization purposes. If and when, after a number of failed attempts, the woman's body accepts one group of stem cells and a fetus begins to develop, any and all left-over stem cells are destroyed. Bush argues that he will not support the study of these left-over stem cells because in order to study them, they must be destroyed. Of coruse he neglects to point out that if not studied, these left-over stem cells will be destroyed anyway. If we grant Bush his point that a group of stem cells is on par with you, me and all other conscious humans who have been born, how is it valuing in life to let these human lives be tossed out by the hospitals rather than being studied in order to save others' lives and heal others' bodies?

While arguing for his stance on stem cell research in the second debate, Bush said that (since my memory is less-than-perfect, i'll paraphrase, if anyone cares to correct me, i'd appreciate it) we must not destroy life in order to save lives.
In response, I'd like to ask President Bush, "What then is the purpose of the war in Iraq?" So, we now clearly see that Bush's ethical stance applied to the issue of stem cell research is in direct conflict with the stance he takes in regard to the doctrine of pre-emptive war.

Without going into the subjects of abortion and gay marriage I think it is clear that Bush has no coherent ethical system. He floats from one ethical theory to another. Some may say he is lead from theory to theory by his gut. Others say he is lead by a political strategy. I don't know which is the case, but I'll admit that there's another possibility: Bush is in fact being lead by God. However, if this is in fact the case, then Satan help us.

pre-emptive war and christians. As the christians who support bush are mostly fundamentalists they believe also in the old testament which has some rather strong passages about wiping out enemies before they attack.

enough said about religion it will only distract from thread

Edited to add that I knew about Bush and his antics in TX and he has some serious black marks on my list of important issues namely religious expression and the right to choose.

Exactly what she said, just add his death penalty antics to the list of black marks.
