My conspiracy theory is that the tape is a fake. A ploy by the republicans to get to the voters just before the election. Hmmmnnn? Is this possible with the technology today?

Possible? Yes. But so is me getting laid tonight.

I highly doubt either is true.

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who is a video/film editor last night about this. He said that of course it's possible, but more difficult than you might think. Apparently it's harder to use CG to make a lower quality video than to have it look really good. That's why so much movie CG looks fake - it's too perfect. When you have a computer render your images for you they come out mathematically perfect and then you have to screw around with them to add touches of reality. Adding the graininess and low quality that was in this video would have been hard. Not impossible, but hard.

The other thing is - if you were going to make a fake Bin Laden video, why not have him actually say something? His little speech was stupid and pointless, it was the video equivalent of him saying "Hey, remember me?" While it might give a very minor edge to one of the candidates it probably will be meaningless.

(coming from a film/video editor for Carmichael Films)

While it is possible... this would be extremely hard to pull off even by an experienced graphics artist and his or her editor.

Dude.... No way in hell this tape is a fake.

Wether it be a coincidence before the election.. i believe so. Other world leaders/guys who are important/not important/terrorists have always made a broadcast before some election.

I believe the tape to be real.

And I remember Bin-Laden saying it wasnt about If Bush or Kerry won the election... but the issue of foreign policy. So The message he was stating... yet threatening did remain neutral in the sense of both parties.

He did say something, but al-Jazeera only played 1/3 of the 18 minute tape. Bin Laden's whining about how tough his job is lately, and how Bush invaded Iraq for the oil. Who can say why the Bush-hating American media and al-Jazeera aren't interesting in running the whole tape?

http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/33063.htm

October 31, 2004 -- Osama bin Laden doesn't seem nearly so cocky in the unedited version of a videotape aired on al-Jazeera, complaining that the manhunt against him has hampered al Qaeda. Osama bin Laden's newest tape may have thrust him to the forefront of the presidential election, but what was not seen was the cave-dwelling terror lord talking about the setbacks al Qaeda has faced in recent months.

Officials said that in the 18-minute long tape — of which only six minutes were aired on the al-Jazeera Arab television network in the Middle East on Friday — bin Laden bemoans the recent democratic elections in Afghanistan and the lack of violence involved with it.

On the tape, bin Laden also says his terror organization has been hurt by the U.S. military's unrelenting manhunt for him and his cohorts on the Afghan-Pakistani border.

A portion of the left-out footage includes a tirade aimed at President Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, claiming the war in Iraq is purely over oil.

The tape also sparked some concern that an attack aimed at disrupting Tuesday's election may be planned.

But those who have seen the tape have said there was no specific information regarding an attack.

"We are taking this very seriously," said one counterterrorism official. "This is cause for great concern and we are certainly going on higher alert because of this."

The Terrorist Threat Integration Center, a joint FBI-CIA intelligence-gathering organization, has drawn up possible attack scenarios for officials to look out for — based on information gathered from communication intercepts and interviews with al Qaeda detainees.

The most extreme of those scenarios includes a multi-pronged biological- and chemical-weapons attack; more airline hijackings; assaults on financial institutions with the use of car and truck bombs and an attack similar to the Madrid subway bombing in march.

Many believe that the ringleader of any possible attack is Adnan Shukriagumah, a 28-year-old Saudi-born Guyanese man who grew up in South Florida.

A $5 million reward has been offered for Shukriagumah, who has bomb- making skills, is trained to fly commercial jets and has been linked to Sept. 11 ringleader, Mohamed Atta.

Intelligence reports say Shukriagumah has hooked up with the El Salvadorian street gang, MS-13, which is known to be very adept at smuggling drugs and people into the United States. With Post Wire Services

Don't they normally say that it might contain trigger phrases for terror actions?

al Qaeda as it existed at the time of 911 has been destroyed. It's a shame that the invasion of Iraq has recruited very many new suicide bombers, eh?

Agreed. Untill we see the rest who knows? I'm not sure Al-Jezzera has relased the rest of the tapes contents to other media outlets so I don't think it's fair to blame American media outlets.
I highly doubt this tape is a fake. Bin Laden is against America's foreign policy and other Western countries support of it, not one candidate or another. The fact he states this in his little speech goes a long way to making me believe the tape is authentic. Sorry to say, but the Republican Spin Machine isn't that smooth.

fake or not the timing is a little to coincidental. They also didn't translate the whole tape for the public, conveniently leaving out the references to bush..

Bush is fighting the wrong war.

"Almost thirty million injuries and over 20,000 deaths are caused each year by defective or unsafe products, including such everyday items as hairdryers, toasters, baby chairs, air conditioners, automobiles and hand tools". Source

Give me billions of dollars and let me take away your long lived rights and I will make the world safe from toasters and the people who make toasters.

It's kind of funny seeing Liberals regroup their conspiracy theories after the "Bush will produce the captured Bin Laden" idea bit the dust.

Bin Laden knows how to play the media. He knows that the audio messages he periodically releases have lost their shock value, but a video message would get him on the front page of newspapers for days.

So when would be the best time for him to release the "first sight of Bin Laden since the war" MPEG? The timing is not coincidental - it's deliberate. Bin Laden wants headlines and what bigger stage than the US elections?

The presidency is a 24/7 job. He is NEVER "on vacation" as those reports like to keep saying. Those figures also include his weekend "time off". Are you on vacation every time its your day off? Are you on vacation right after you punch that time clock and go home? Get real, please. whatever

Well maybe it's just Walter Cronkite, wtchlkn4 and the author of that Tin Foil Hat Liberal conspiracy site posted in another thread that think it's a neocon set up.

If you look closely the shadows all fall in different directions.....

What he is saying is that for months people said Bush was going to trot OBL out right in time for the election. This doesnt seem to be likely right now. The comment made sense to me. Try rereading the post.
