Former SG member Doctashock, a resident of Toledo, Ohio, in Lucas County, has received notice that the validity of his voter registration is being challenged, and that he will have to appear in court this Saturday to answer the challenge or be denied the right to vote.
Miss Harrington is heavily involved with the GOP, as demonstrated by this PBS article quoting her reaction to the Presidential debates:
Megan Harrington, president of the College Republicans and a sophomore majoring in political science, watched the debate at the Republican Victory Center in Maumee.
"Bush was consistent with his statements," Harrington said.
"Everybody knows where he stands, especially on national security and the Iraq War."
On what grounds is his registration being challenged?
They say he doesn't live where he lives. How the fuck, then, did he receive these letters?
Doctashock registered as an Independent, and, for the record, he says that he does not live in a predominantly black neighborhood. However, he is an African American, with a name (Jermaine) that is common among African Americans. Makes you wonder why his registration was among those selected to be challenged, considering that 90% of blacks (Republicans, Democrats, and Independents) voted for Al Gore in 2000.
Doctashock will show up in court to defend his right to vote. How many won't?
Update: Doctashock is not a college student, and his driver's license does match his home address, and is the same address he registered at.
Update II: Say hello to the fine folks visiting us from Atrios, who has now linked to this story.
Update III: And I know this is upsetting, but please don't break any laws. Don't be a criminal like our dear friend Megan.

It's very easy to get letters sent to places you don't technically have residence in. Like this crazy Canadian woman living in my driveway who gets mail at our house now.
Not that I'm saying that is what happened here. I'm just saying it is easy.

Nono, you're not saying that at all, just suggesting that that's one possible explanation by posting that in this thread.
He lives there. It's his fucking address. What part of that did you miss?

Oh god. I think this is at least as bad as the debacle where people were told they'd be arrested at the polls if they owed taxes or rent to anyone, in any amount. It was just creepy enough for people to believe.

He'll win and his vote will be counted. What's the problem?
Hello? Last time I checked, we lived in America Town? You know, that place that has consistently, since it's inception, extended the franchise and removed barriers to voting?
You shouldn't have to go to a hearing because some partisan piece of shit challenges your right to vote.
I hope this correspondence has been forwarded to someone else besides us intarweb porn board idiots. Like maybe someone who might do some actual investigation?

What's the problem!? God stockula, how dense are you? The problem here is that if he's getting challenged, there's a pretty damn good reason (especially considering the recent stories about the RNC hiring people to challenge black voter registrations in Florida) to believe that a large number of minorities all over areas where a close vote is likely are getting challenged similarly. And when a large number of validly registered minorities have their voter registration status challenged, a lot of them won't counter the challenge, and their votes won't be counted. This is voter intimidation, plain and simple, and I'm sorry to see that your cognitive dissonance is to great to let you see that.
How would you like it if all of the white males in Alaska had their voter registration status challenged, and had to go to court in order to prove that they live where they say they do? What kind of effect do you think that would have on voter turnout in your area?

I'm going to send it to Daily Kos, and forward it to the Ohio Democratic party.

Do what? If everything's jake, what is the problem?
People shouldn't have to defend their right to vote, genius.
Sure they should. We wouldn't want people cheating and cheapening their vote.
I dont know if you know this, but Blockbuster Video has more stringent procedures to rent videos to their members than it takes to vote.
Any sort of due dilligence to assure voters are qualified sounds good to me. One party is stridently opposed to dilligence and voter verification. Why that is, I could not possibly imagine.

A question to Keith, will Docta be able to schedule the court appearance before the 2nd? Or could this delay him from voting in this election?
