..tonight?

My wife and I were there. I was the guy who asked Mr. Coburn:

Mr. Coburn,

I know that President Bush appointed you to head the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Why do you feel someone who regularly protests the "homosexual agenda" was an appropriate choice for that post?

There was some other shit, I'll get into it later. The Coburn/Bush supporters were absolutely horrid, booing Carson when he tried to speak and shouting things like "NOOOO. NO. NO. ", "THAT'S NOT TRUE!" and "ANSWER THE QUESTION!"

Great question

At least a hundred Carson volunteers showed up at 4:30 (the debate started at 7) to stand on the corner and hold Carson signs. Just Carson signs. No Kerry signs. No anti-war signs. Not even anti-Coburn signs. Nothin. Just holding Carson signs, cheering, and getting cars to honk for us.

About an hour later, a group of no more than 10 Coburn/Bush supporters arrived. They had a ten foot sign that said "BRAD CARSON IS A LIBERAL" and a few Coburn signs. Then they started to plant Coburn/Bush/Cheney (all on one sign) signs all over. I jibed the incredibly hateful looking Bush guy who was doing this, "What's the matter? Not enough people to hold them?"

He shot back hatefully "No. They're all at work supporting you people!"

Clever.

When we started to put our signs up and come inside, a group of three police officers who were there tried to prevent us from entering. He said we were "protestors" and not allowed in. When several of us starting ranting about how, y'know, this IS still a democracy, and "What's your name?" and all that, he finally relented.

Carson is not a good speaker. He speaks intelligently and clearly, but his enunciation is so precise and monotone that he sounds like a robot, or a brainwashed cult member. Coburn was much more effective. He spent the entire debate calling Carson a liberal, with no less than three mentions of Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. His supporters, as I said, were horrible. It was like they were in a church, and Carson was trying to tell them there is no God. They responded to Coburn's every statement with 'Amen" and "That's right!". The Carson supporters were much more polite, though there was some raucus applause when Carson finally said "Everybody's a liberal compared to Tom Coburn."

It was dispicable. My wife wanted to walk out in the middle of it.

Our democracy's in trouble, folks.

Yes. But now I wish I had added: "Was Rick Santorum not available?"

Living in a blue state does wonders for my overall demeanor. Dealing with the far right and the prospect of four more years of Bush would be more than I could handle. My hat's off to you, Keith and Gwenhyfar.

That's why it'll be so sweet when he loses. Of all the exciting Senate races out there this year, there's no bigger piece of shit to be found than Coburn. skull

It's VERY frustrating. God, I hate Bible thumpers.
