Thanks for the response, I wasnt tyring to imply that my argument was a be and end all by any means.
Of course guns do not whisper death and destruction into peoples ears. But just knowing one has the 'trump card' often leads to unnecessary use fo such weapons. Guns dont kill people, people do, obviously. You say that it is the moral fabric of America that makes it more violent, I do not see how having guns and assault weapons readily available does anything but increase the liklihood of people employing deadly force more often, and perpetuate the cycle.
For example in a crime of passion situation, you come home and your wife or significant other is in bed with another guy/girl, you become blinded by rage and reach for a weapon. Oh look there is a gun on the table or anythwere for that matter, blam, dead. Without guns you must employ vastly less lethal methods to hurt someone, even if you have it under lock and key in a safe.
Violent moral fabric isnt some abstract construction independant of environment, weapons that are available are more likely to be used. And even if America is more 'violent' than Canada for example, you would rather try and change the morality of millions of people instead of just restricting access to military grade weaponry?
